Chance for Duke? Will chance back!

Hi Everyone!
My friend mentioned CC to me a few days ago, so I decided to make an account! As a second semester junior, I have been contemplating which colleges to apply to next year. I was hoping if I put some of my information in this post, you guys could potentially help me start looking in the right direction

GPA (UW): 3.38
SAT score: I am taking my first one in a few weeks
SAT Subject Tests: I will be taking the Biology, Literature, and Chinese ones in the near future.
AP Test: I will be taking the Biology one this semester as well.
Ethnicity: Asian
Location SF Bay Area, California
Fun Fact: I have lived in about 12 US states, 15 cities. I moved A LOT as a child

Course Load:

Freshman: Literature/Writing, Biology, Oral Composition (Speech), PE 9, Principles of Business, Geometry, Chinese 1

Sophomore: Algebra 2, Media Assistant, Chemistry Honors, World Literature, World History, Dance, Chinese 2

Junior: American Literature, American History, AVID Tutor, Chinese 3, Pre-Calculus, Journalism, AP Biology

Senior (tentative): Contemporary Literature, Physiology, AP Government (1 semester), Economics (1 semester), Journalism, AVID Head Tutor, Chinese 4 Honors

EC's (all for 2+ years):
- Nationally accredited school newspaper (Section Editor)
- Teen publication (Officer)
- Future Practicing Physician's Network (Officer)
- Medical Explorers Post (Secretary)
- Link Leader
- Volunteer at local hospital
- Peer Counselor

Tentative Major: Neuroscience

I understand that compared to most students here on CC, my GPA is on the lower side. I also have not taken too many AP/Honors courses. However, my high school is one of the top ranked public high schools in the country. Even the regular courses are EXTREMELY difficult. Despite this, I wanted to make a change in my community, which is so uptight and hell-bent on defining people by their GPA/SAT score. As a peer counselor, link leader, and our school's teen publication officer, I have strived to make high school an enjoyable place for everyone. This is why I feel like I can contribute a lot to the campus of any college that I go to

So far I have a few "reach" schools in mind. Personally, I would really love to go to Duke (they have a great neuroscience program, and I used to live near Raleigh, NC!), but I know exactly how difficult it is to get admitted. Maybe I have a chance at ED? You guys can let me know about that, as well as other schools (safeties, matches, and reaches) that I should apply to/have a legitimate chance at!

On a last note, thanks to anyone who replies! I really appreciate it!!

It a big reach. You have a very low GPA for Duke and are haven’t completed an AP course yet. Additionally, your ECs (for Duke) are average at best. Nothing there stands out as particularly impressive to me. The high school ranking might help a bit, but not much. They still expect you to excel if you are to do well at Duke.

I also go to a top rated high school (top 10 nationally) and have done great yet I still didn’t get in (and will likely get rejected now). Sorry if my post was a little harsh, but I was trying to give you an honest and realistic answer. I wish you the best and hope you do get in, but keep in mind that you will love where ever you go.

Also just a note on you making the school a better place: most Duke applicants already do that, but do more. Not just the school, but the community. They are incredibly involved and genuinely care about what they do, they are outgoing and nice people, yet they also have great academic stats.

If you want more advice feel free to PM me. Good luck! Please chance me back too!

Duke: reach

I think it’s a really huge reach… if you do very well on your SAT’s maybe.

I’m cynical and jaded (a side-effect of being on CC more than 6 months) but Duke would be really really a reach…you’d have to have either 1) a really good SAT score to overcome your GPA and/or 2) great ECs…also, Duke (like lot of top 20s) thrives on being “uptight and hell-bent on defining people by their GPA/SAT score” LOL…sorry to be so cynical…but i’ve been following the kids who get admitted to these schools and the reality is that you need 1) great scores and 2) a great passion in some area.

@zm0212 duke is a huge reach. You’d need 700’s in all SAT sections to even stand a chance. Best of luck though.
