<p>Hi guys, I'm an international asian student taking the IB Diploma Programme. I'll be applying to Duke's Biology department (Bachelor of Sciences). Anyways here are my stats:</p>

<p>IB Grades:
Chemistry (HL): 6
Biology (HL): 7
English (HL): 6</p>

<p>Maths (SL): 6
Economics (SL): 6
English (SL): 6</p>

<p>Total: 37/42 (With additional points, probably 39/45)</p>

<p>GPA Conversion: 4.0</p>

<p>SATs:
M - 680, CR - 710, W - 620 (Got a 6 in my essay...) Total: 2010
Biology - Taking in November
Chemistry - Taking in November</p>

<p>ECs:
Student Leader
Head of Environmental Action
Organizer of Cancer Fund's Stride for a Cure Event
Leader of Can-Recycling Project
Volunteer at Local Hospital
100+ hours of service
2-week Medicine Course at University of Toronto
Volunteer English Teacher at Local Primary School
English Editor of School Magazine
A-Division Club Tennis Team (6 years)
Varsity Basketball Team (4 years)</p>

<p>I also have one question, if you guys have the time: I'm aware that my writing score is well below standard for Duke. But since I take Higher Level English and have a good reference about my ability to write from my English teacher, would it make that 620 somewhat less significant in the admissions officer's eyes? Also, would a fantastic personal statement and supplementary essay have a similar effect?</p>

<p>I think you have pretty good chances - I’m in a similar boat as you (but for Columbia), my SAT’s only 2060), I’m on full IB ! woot woot… (Math SL: predicted 5, Econ SL: 7, Bio SL: 6, English A1 HL: predicted 6, History HL: predicted 7, Spanish A1 HL, predicted 6 = 37/42, like you!)</p>

<p>However IB demonstrates highest rigor of classes so that’s good.
Your ECs are strong and shows your interest/passion.
I’d say reasonably strong chances at Duke. Good luck!</p>

<p>The problem is all of your scores are low for Duke, not just writing. It’s a major reach.</p>

<p>How do you get a 39/45 IB Diplomma and only get a 2010 SAT? I will be happy to get anything above a 32 and I’m in the 2250-2300 range on my SAT. </p>

<p>Honestly it probably is a big reach but it really shouldn’t be. It is infinitely harder to get 6’s and 7’s on IB tests than in is to score 2300+ on the SAT. Colleges need to give IB more credit. Just Saying.</p>
