Would i be able to get into this school with a 2.9 gpa and a 20 act score? with early apps
Majoring in computer science?
please do not give me any alternatives.

you can give it a shot, but since computer science is an impacted major, I’d say you probably won’t make it. They’re EXTREMELY selective when it comes to impacted majors.

I agree, it’s probaby a long shot - apply here and elsewhere. Maybe Channel Island, Sac, Monterey and Sonoma.

CS is a very challenging major at all CSU campuses. Maybe apply undeclared, take a CS class or two and declare after you’ve had a real taste of the program.

^^ Undeclared is also an impacted major.

Maybe i should apply as a software engineer?

That’s under the Computer Engineering program: [Computer Engineering Program | Cal Poly Pomona](http://www.csupomona.edu/~ece/program/computer.html)

Still impacted.

Ugh. what gpa/test score is required for CS. Why do they not lost it on there?

gpa/test scores are the same throughout the college. the point of the matter is that they are severely critical of all applicants who apply. a 2.0 GPA is all that is required, but if you have a few thousand applicants that have a 3.7 GPA, chances are you’re going to take those before someone with a 2.9 GPA.

You could try applying into the business adminstration school for the CIS program and then see if you can change your major from there. There are a lot fewer applicants in the CIS program.

Now that the application window is open - apply away. Honestly I don’t think your major choice will be a factor. Just recognize, unless you are in the local service area, it is a stretch and you need a back-up plan. You should be able to gain admission to the schools I listed above and they offer credible degrees.

Good luck.

Do you guys have any other options that i could apply early app for? is UC merced a better school to get into ?

You aren’t really a good candidate for a the UC. Few CSUs do EA.

I think Monterey Bay, Sac, Channel Island and maybe Sonoma are all options for you.

Please, go to a community college.

You can make up for any mistakes you made in high school and transfer somewhere good down the road. You’re given a clean slate. That being said, you’re going to have to handle college level CS classes pretty well.

I don’t see why you would think that you could even stand a chance of getting into UC Merced when you can’t get into Cal Poly Pomona. I wouldn’t say UC Merced is worth it simply because it’s another 10 grand a year for basically the same level or less education. I don’t think I’ve ever heard one good thing about it and I do not personally know anyone who applied there when I was at community college. Most of the time it was UCLA, USC, Cal Poly SLO, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, or Cal Poly Pomona. But you have to pay 30 grand at any UC, so you might as well make it a good one. Many people I’ve known do choose one of the Cal Poly’s over mid-tier UC’s when considering engineering/science, though. If you like practical, come to a Cal Poly. Just work your butt off.

Well and if I don’t do any good at a community college what do I do?

Transfering to a UC, particularly in CS will require you to have a solid GPA (3.3-3.5) at the CC. At some point you have to perform. If you do really poorly @ a CC, you are kind of stuck until you make up your classes/gpa.

CS is really competitive and requires many hours of hard work - no matter where you take it. Perhaps you aren’t cut our for it. There are similar majors that aren’t as intense. You could go in undeclared and take one CS class your first semester. (you can do this at CC or a CSU). If you do poorly, it won’t totally ruin your GPA.

The application window just opened. Apply to 5-6 CSUs (Sac, Monterey, Channel Islands, Pomona, Sonoma?) and see where you get in. If none of them work for you, then head to a CC. No matter where you wind up, you are going to have to work your butt off.

Is it early app now? Because some of my friends are applying for 2/3. So i am guessing it’s not. Then how do i apply for early decision ?

Cal Poly SLO is the only CSU that has early decision. Applications for early decision need to be submitted by October 31. Decisions will come out December 15. No other CSU’s or UC’s offer early decision. You can apply to Cal Poly Pomona anytime between Oct 1-Nov 30. My son has applied for Computer Science also. His CSU GPA= 3.83 and ACT= 31. He is really worried that he may not get in since it is now impacted. He has also applied to 5 other CSU’s. Apply broadly but keep a CC has a backup plan.
