Chance for ED brown or columbia

Hello!
I haven't decided between ED brown or columbia, but I will soon! I am currently a junior who happens to be an asian male :)

GPA: 3.8/4- This is because I got 3 B+ in junior year. This was partly due to one of my best friends dying, and it really messed up my second quarter grades. My guidance councilor tells me that she will write a letter for me if I wish. How will this come into play? (btw, the classes were bc calc, ap physics, and ap chem)

SAT- 2340
SAT 2- 800 math2, chem, bioE, bioM, APUSH

EXTRACURRICULARS-
- Captain of the debate team at my school. 4th place policy debate in my state, powerplaced to technically state champion, 1st place regionals, 1st place district, made it to NCFLs twice (going in two weeks to the second one, NCFL is a national level tournament), top 8 in many national tournaments

MUN president-
won numerous gavels and speaking awards

JSA president- havent won many awards, used JSA as a medium to write a political newspaper at my school, combined with young democrats and republicans and MUN in order to make a "politics club" at my school. We host tournaments for both MUN and JSA.

10 year violinist-
1st violin in regionals and county level, 1st chair in two out-of-school youth orchestras, and 1st chair in my own school orchestra for three years. Play in a quartet. I also perform classically and unclassically, as in my friends and I go around and play fun songs like movie music (I play electric violin :D). Composed some duets with my guitar friend. Creator and conductor of an afterschool chamber group at my school.

VOLUNTEERING-
received 3 presidential silver awards and 1 presidential gold award for volunteering (total of over 1200 hours)
Volunteered over 800 of those hours for special needs children. I participated in special olympics, tutored special needs children, started a club at my school that specializes in raising funds for a local special needs program, taught kids at an internship for a school especially created for children with mental disabilities.

KEY CLUB-
president, member for 4 years, not much to be said :/

NHS-
president, member for 2 years, again, not much to be said.

SCIENCE-
President of science honor society, this involves competing in science competitions such as science olympiad. Raised funds for scientific equipment for our school.

NASA-
participated in a NASA program over the course of a year which involves an online class. I learned about space exploration and development, as well as astrophysics. Was invited to a 4 week NASA camp over the summer in order to get hands on experience. Also have some internships and work experience under my belt for astrophysics.

ACADEMIC COMPETITION PRESIDENT-
Won 2nd place in district, 4th in regionals, also competed in other academic competitions, generally placed 2-3rd place. I also won a regional history fair where I wrote a 30 page report on political corruption, if that means anything.

-TAEKWONDO BLACK BELT 3RD DEGREE-
10 years, im an instructor (help little kids), also the leader of the demo squad (we do flips and stuff)

Mostly I am just really worried about my GPA, because those three Bs at the end of my junior year is going to reflect a downward trend, and I don't really want to use my lack of motivation as an excuse. Im sure there are more things that I am forgetting, but these are the major ones. Thanks! :)

And by the way, that GPA puts me at about 40th place at my school out of about 500.

What state are you from? Type of HS? Ethnicity?

I live in Maryland. I am not sure of the state ranking, but we have been ranked multiple times as one of the top 100 public schools in the US. I am asian, and my income bracket is about 80k-100k.

dayum, unfortunate time for your best friend to die (sorry about that though :frowning: ).

That letter explaining your circumstance will be of utmost importance, because the 3 B+ would make it appear that you aren’t the highest achiever if no context was given. Your scores are solid (800 in all those subject tests?), but there should also be a record of you having done well prior to the unfortunate circumstance (e.g. all/mostly all As on the transcript before hand). Granted you have a previous record of success, the poor gpa/rank will be understood as a result of the circumstances you will explain so though it might inevitably impact your chances, the impacts would be mitigated.

Your ECs are quite good though; a ton of leadership demonstrated, initiative, achievement in activities, music ability, dedicated service, etc. This will certainly help you convey that you are a motivated individual in contrast with what your grades suggest.

You can only look ahead now. All in all, I think you can make a good case and, given your other achievements, you will not be passed off. It’s hard to asses your chances because of the circumstances, but if you normally would have been in, say the top 10 of your class, I would have said you would have had an excellent shot at either of your choices. Hopefully the school that you choose will see that.

^OP is in the Top 10%, though I’m not sure if you’re referring to top 10 rank.
