out of the 67 that read this....could some1 please be so kind as to respond...i'd respond to your questions if I knew the answers...

i have very similar stats, and i'm also applying to emory e.d... i think we both have a good shot, but no one on this board can tell you b/c no one really knows what theyre talkinga bout, so dont bother asking. usually they arent very encouraging and it just makes people feel bad. i'm going by what my guidance counselor has told me. .. emory is very unpredictable also, from what people from my school have experienced in the past. for example last year they let in someone with a 4.1 gpa and rejected someone with a 4.5 (out of 5, with a very weird scale that my school invented to be annoying)... so honestly, anythings possible.

thanks for the response. and ya thats a real good point, people here dont know any better than I would. anyways, good luck with Emory.

you too.. what other schools have you looked at?

Wash U., Vanderbilt, Georgetown, and Northwestern....I dont mind the New England schools...but I kinda wanna go somewhere different..south...u know. How about you?

yeah, thats why i want to go somewhere different, im applying all over the place haha including all 3 coasts... my top choices other than emory are umiami, santa clara, ut austin, wash u, william & mary, wake forest, pomona... i looked at georgetown and vanderbilt too but i dont think i'm going to apply to those ones

Hilary, what are your stats? My DD is also applying to Emory ED although it is a reach for her. She is also applying to U Miami, U Florida, Wash U, Boston U, GWU and two safeties. You are from Mass., what do you think of Boston U. for business and social life?

stats: i have a 4.0 gpa out of 5.0 but with a weird scale system at my school (the only way you can get a 5.0 is with an A in an AP or honors class, so its like... negatively weighted..), so my average is around a B+/A-. ive taken generally hard courses at a very competitive boston suburb school, adn both my course difficulty and grades have gone up steadily since freshman year. this year im taking ap psych, ap stat, ap spanish, honors english (no ap available) and project physics (i hate physics). 2050 SAT (though ive only taken it once and im taking it again this saturday), NMSF (yes i scored better on my PSATs w/out any studying or prep than my SATs somehow..awesome.) ... my biggest strengths are my extracurriculars, my writing, and my reccomendations though, so even though my GPA is a little under par for emory i hope that will make up for it (varsity swim team captain, youth group leader at church, 4-year key club, tons of community service, spanish exchange program over the summer, etc).
what are your daughters stats?

my guidance counselor says emorys like a 50/50 for me, so i'm hoping ED will help me out. i really want to go to emory but if i dont get in i'll still be happy at u miami or santa clara.

i have some friends who go to BU, they love it. social life is great. i went to an OAR concert there last year, bostons a great college city and BU is a great school, although i don't really know anything about the business program. i just would not be able to go to college in the same state i've lived in for the past 11 years!

any info about u miami since you are from south florida? my moms from florida (she went to UF), but i've never lived there.

U Miami is where many of DD's friends are going and they are encouraging her to come too. Academically, my friends son is in the business program and very happy with it. Socially, kids go to South Beach a lot, OOSers spend weekends by the pool, there are great concerts on campus, Coconut Grove is a very upscale neighborhood. Kids seem very very happy there but since it is only about a 50 min. drive from our home...I think DD would be better off experiencing someplace else.
I went to BU (class of '81) and loved Boston. Think that DD would be very happy there if her first love (Emory) rejects her. She is a match for BU (even before legacy status). She had 2010 on May SAT so Emory is reach...but a possible one.

do you think, being from boston, i woudl feel like an outsider at miami? or are there people from all over the place there?

Lots of people from everywhere. Lot of New Yorkers, lot of internationals.
