please chance me for engineering programs at mit, cornell, upenn, johns hopkins, rice, and columbia

sat: 800m, 650cr, 780w
sat2: 800chem, 760bio-ecology, (will take math2 this year)

gpa - 96.5 unweighted

all ap and honors classes at my school(toughest possible curriculum)
soph: ap world - 5
junior (current) - ap calc bc, ap physics b, ap us hist, ap eng lang

EC:
math team - various local awards
debate team - various local awards and state qualifier
science research - various local awards (this summer i have plans to perform college level research with a mentor professor at a university)

i am very passionate about math and science - i enjoy the subjects and my grades and EC's demonstrate my enthusiasm - thanks for your insight!

Your are a shoe in at all but MIT. You have a good shot at MIT if you ace the math SAT. EC’s are a bit mediocre - pad them as much as you can. If you can take a strong summer program and ace your math SAT and pad the EC’s I would say you have a strong chance at MIT.

i did ace the math sat
and i have already been accepted into an extremely selective and prestigious summer reseach program at a local university where i will individually perform college level research

sorry about this … but does “shoe in” mean that i have a really good shot?

i’d prefer not to say over the internet, though i will say that it is a state university and the acceptance rate is around 15%. don’t let the state u part fool you though, it is one of the best public research schools around.

It certainly will NOT help, but I think that as far as engineering schools are concerned you will NOT be hurt either. I mean of course, all things being equal and you and one other person are the last of the selectees and he scored 50 pts higher on CR, well, you know.

But, do the worry, you are solid.

And as far as your “State” school project, I feel that it is not as strong (on paper) as something more formal with a carriculum. Think about it, if you were an admissions officer and see this these two:

1) Duke University TIP Summer program - Robotics.

2) Fancy State University - Interned with an important project.

Which one would you give more credance to? I mean, your Fance State U. project may be far superior in every way, but unless you wright a complete discription they will never know that it is not some rink-a-dink program. And, even if you did write a big dessertation on how wonderful and superior you Fancy State U. project was, do you think that the MIT admissions people are going to read it??? They have thousands of applications to go through.

Of course as in all of these threads, this is just my opinion.

no this state university thing is a legitimate program - the program just assigns you with a mentor to work individually. Kids from all over the country come to participate in this program, it’s just not lectures and classes but hands-on projects. thanks for your opinions!
