Chance for engineering?

3.9 unweighted GPA
most rigorous class schedule possible, 6 ap classes by end of senior year
top 2% of my class
29 ACT (35 math) (27 science) (31 english) (23 reading)

Other people say that, for engineering, ACT is about 30-34. I'm concerned that mine is slightly lower. This is my in-state flagship, and my family can't afford other private schools or OOS tuition. Will I have a good shot at it?

I plan to major in bioengineering. Is this a very competitive major?

Bioengineering is the most difficult program to get into at UIUC. Mainly because the program is so small. Please see this post:

A 23 on the ACT reading section? Wow.

Buy an ACT prep book, and figure out a way to improve that score.

Also, I have had people tell me that U of I has different admissions requirements for people throughout the state. If you live in Chicago or the burbs and have lots of classmates applying to UIUC, admissions will be more strict than if you went to a high school in Southern Illinois.

way to be a dick Bill73… I’m sorry we’re not all as smart as you…

He didn’t say anything bad…

ok…

I didn’t say anything bad. A 23 ACT score is very low. Looking at his other scores, I think he has the ability to score higher.

Get an ACT prep book, raise the reading score 3 to 4 points, and he would be an even better candidate for U of I.

Bill is right, and as far as cost is concerned, don’t be expecting much help, even as an in-state…you may have to start in the LAS (?) with a view to transferring into engineering
