Chance for english major 1800 SAT 3.7 u/w gpa

My daughter really enjoyed her visit to UCD. Just wondering what her chances are for admission. Her SAT’s (1800) weren’t incredible, but compared to CC’s, looks low. Her unweighted GPA is 3.7 but she is taking 6 academic classes this year (her junior year) including 2 AP’s so hoping it will raise her weighted GPA. She has over 300 hours of community service working weekly at a local hospital. 3 years volleyball as well as club volleyball in off season. No work experience yet, hoping to get job this summer.
so… does she even have a chance?? I know most people on CC seem to be going science/engineering route but given that she is english/creative writing she wouldn’t be going for an area that is highly impacted.
Thanks for your opinions and any advice :)

Forgot to mention that she has been on honor roll her whole highschool career and has also been a member of CSF every semester. Will most likely be Gold Sealbearer with distinction. Has never received a C on her report card.

she will be just fine i think, i got in for a science major with a slightly lower gpa, and only moderately higher SAT scores. and the fact that she has lots of EC’s will help, because i really think it helped me!

UC Davis gives points in their admissions system for #of A-G courses taken during high school so taking 6 academic classes will also earn additional points.

Thanks collegemom16! I know you are very knowledgeable about UCD, any adivce on other ways to make herself a better candidate?? She really loved the school as did my husband and I and think it is a perfect fit for her! Is there a specific major you might suggest she apply under that would still be in the realm of her interests? i.e. writing, classics, english. She loves history too, would she have a better shot going under a history major? I appreciate any tips you could give :)

You said your daughter plays volleyball and also plays club. Is she a D1 candidate for volleyball? Does she want to play in college? That might be an avenue to explore.

No she doesn’t want to play. Son who was recruited for tennis and goes to UCSD ended up quitting the team and now plays on a travel club team. I do believe the tennis did initially help get him into SD (Coach personally walked over his transcripts etc…) my daughter is no where near the talent he was as far as recruiting goes. After hearing from him about how much time practice etc. takes away from academics and studying she decided not to even play her senior year in high school or do club instead focusing on getting top grades and college apps. She was at a level where it wouldn’t make a difference on her getting in.

Oh well, just a thought. I know that oftentimes even if a kid wants to try to walk on a coach will “sponsor” the application to get the kid into the college. Whether they make the team or not is questionable. I think it is very hard to get into UCD, bottom line is they are decreasing enrollment and kids are excelling so much that even kids with above 4.0 gpa’s are overlooked. Good luck to your daughter… I hope she gets in.
