Chance for GT

Hey. I was wondering what my chances are for georgia tech.

Gpa: 4.35/5 (I had a bad freshmen year (B- average), but had a B+ average soph and jr year. I also took only honors classes. I also took AP comp sci AB in Jr year and got an A and 5 on test)

Sat: 2300: Math 800, Writing 800, Critical Reading 700

EC's
Active member of Engineering club, witch competes in an intense robotics competition
President of non-electronic startegy games club

I'm also out of state

How does your GA work? Is it 5.0 = A, 4.0 = B, 3.0 = C, 2.0 = D, 0 = F or is there a different system? Is that a weighted or unweighted GP? Do you have any AP or IB courses?

My grade system works like this

A Standard class has gpa out of 4. For a standard class, a 4 is an A, a 3 is a B, a C is a 2 etc

for an honors or AP class, gpa is out of 5, with an A being a 5, A- being a 4.7 B+ being a 4.5, and a B being a 4.3

I hand a 4.55 average (or B+/A-) average for sophmore and junior year, but a 4 gpa in freshman taking only honors classes.

I also took AP Computer Science AB this year (Jr) and got a 5 and an A in the class
Next year I’ll be taking the following AP classes:

AP calc BC
AP Physics C
AP Chemistry
AP statistics

What is your unweighted GPA?

Your schools GPA calculation is irrelevant. Georgia Tech calculates GPA as outlined below:

"We use a standard 4.0 grading scale but only factor in the core curriculum courses (see below). For students taking AP, IB, or College level classes, we award an additional one-half point (0.5) for each course.
Core Curriculum: Grading Scale:
English (4 Units) A = 4.0
Math (4 Units) B = 3.0
Science (3 Units) C = 2.0
Social Science (3 Units) D = 1.0
Foreign Language (2 Units) F = 0.0

Example: If you take AP English and make a B, we would award you 3.5 pts. Last year the competitive range (25th-75th percentile) of high school GPAs was 3.60-3.96 . Visit [Georgia Institute of Technology :: Undergraduate Admission :: Self Reported Academic Record & High School Transcripts](http://www.admiss.gatech.edu/hs_trans/) for more information on high school transcripts and self reported academic records. "

You will not get any weight for honors classes.

If your GPA, using this calculation(4.0 scale/only core courses/.5weight for AP) is at least 3.6 you will probably be ok with your test scores, although such high test scores and a low GPA with little extracurricular involvement doesn’t look very good…

And if you took your AP exam this year you don’t get results back until the third week of July, so how could you possibly know your score?

But an unweighted GPA is necessary to calculate the freshman index and to compare to other data on Collegedata.com

My school doesn’t do unweighted gpa.

Under their recalculated system, I have a 3.3…that doesn’t seem good.

Do they really not take the courses you took, or ± into consideration at all (I got mostly 88’s. Thus I lose because I’m consistently 2% of from getting a massive GPA boost). All highschools are not equal. There are highschools were knowing how to read is enough to be a valedictorian. I went to one of the best public high schools in NY. Does this really bear no weight?

Georgia Tech takes course rigor into consideration when assessing applications. To look at other factors taken into consideration: [Georgia Institute of Technology :: Undergraduate Admission :: Freshman Application Review Process](<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission)

Although there are certainly disparities between high schools, unless those reviewing your application know and recognize this I’m not sure it makes much of a difference in your chances for admission. I know when I submitted my secondary recommendations for PSP there were questions on the counselor recommendation form that were obviously meant to assess the rigor of the school I attended, but this is not part of the regular application. Most schools are interested in how you performed given the opportunities that were available to you, not how you might have performed if you were put into a less competive environment. Attending a more rigorous school does not excuse poorer performance. With that said, they will see your transcript and that you made many high B’s and that MAY be taken into consideration, but it will not be considered in your tech weighted GPA. To try to standardize the admissions process Georgia Tech uses a very formulaic method of assessing applications which may mean they cannot, under the constraint of the existing system of admissions, give weight to an 88 over and 80.

You must realize that your high scores combined with your grades indicate you did not fully apply yourself as a student (someone who scores a 2300 should be academically capable of getting an A at any high school) , and your level of involvement in extracurricular activities doesn’t seem to indicate that you had little time to study. At Georgia Tech your GPA is the most important factor for admission and yours is around the bottom 10%(estimate) range meaning you have a chance but only if you make up for it in other areas.

I would recommend that you apply and work very diligently on a strong admissions essay. Your test scores are a huge plus, but your GPA is concerning and seriously brings into question your work ethic. (If you do get accepted, you will need to work on that!)

For more information about admission statistics you can visit: https://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg02_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=1478

I wish you the best in your college search and application process!

I would be surprised if you got rejected. Probably wouldn’t expect PSP though.

Why do people keep telling me that? Take your transcript, and A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 and calculate it.

What you want to do is take your statistics and compare them to other students that were admitted / rejected this year. Most sites like collegedata collect U/W GPA, which is much more relevent since each high school has different way to weight grades.

According to a calculation where an A is a 4, a B is a 3 a C is a 2 etc., disregrarding any +'s or -'s, I have a 3.3

So I guess my unweighted gpa is a 3.3.

Gulp?

i got in with a 3.33, much lower sat too. in-state though.

About 8% of admitted students have a 3.33 or lower GPA, so that’s not an automatic disqualification by any means. The SAT score is excellent (math and CR in the top quartile), so that bodes well. Your freshman index is a 3165, which is below average (3225), but not horrible.

I think you’ve got a shot, but you’re certainly not safe. You really want to add a math-based AP (Calc A/B) if possible and probably want to add a few more EC’s - it’s awfully thin now. Are you at least employed?

I didn’t actually post my full E/C’s. Those are just my school E/C’s. I also go to a german culture class/club once a week to prseseve my german culture, in witch we read german plays and perform them. This takes a lot of my time (practicing at home). I also forgot to mention I am president of Anime club at my school
Also, engineering club meets 2-5 times a week for two hours each time
