One of my best friends wants to go to Harvard. Here are his stats:

GPA: 3.96 UW
Rank: 6/~310

SAT:
cr:800
m:790
W:740
total:2330

SAT2:
chem:790
lit:800

Class President

Marching Band

He doesnt have specatular ECs, but he is extremely involved in his church (ie,like three church camps every summer, choir, bible study, etc.) primarily because his dad is the pastor. Also because his dad is a pastor, he is like dirt poor, and his family always has two or three foster children at a time. I'm not sure if this is worth noting, but this kid has read just about every book under the sun, fiction or nonfiction. He is also an excellent writer.

As far as academics go, your friend has an equal shot at getting into Harvard as every other applicant. To stand out, he needs solid ECs, great essays and great recommendation letters.

If he lives in a rural area in the midwest or south, i think your friend has extremely good chances. his essays should should also touch on his pastor father, poverty(subtlety is key here!), and the foster kids.

I think your friend has an excellent shot if his essays are properly placed. If he’s as good a writer as you claim he is, he should have no problem getting a full ride.
