Chance for International applicant

Hey guys, Im an international student of Indian origin from Dubai and want to apply in Fall 2010. Basically, I've done GCE O levels [considered the highest level for British Ordinary Level Syllabus] and GCE AS Levels in Maths, Biology, Physics and Chemistry and plan on doing A2 Course in these four subjects this year.

My syllabus does not offer GPA but these are my school and exam grades so far:
Subject: 9th Grade 10th Grade 11th Grade {+Board} 12th Grade{}

English B[72] B[66] A,A[76],{82} x
Maths A[86] A[86] A,A[91],{95}, {99 in C1}
Physics A[90] A[83] A,A[92],{85}, (NA)
Chemistry A[78] A[83] A,A[85],{90}, (NA)
Biology A[83] A[82] A,A[82],{82}, (NA)
Human Biology A[88] A[84] A,A[88],{81}, x
Hindi A[77] A[73] A,B[76],{76}, x
Arabic A[87] A[82] A,A[90],{87}, x

NA- not available atm since results come out in august, but I believe Ive done on par with my O level Board results.
x - because I did not take these in AS levels.

And oh, all the marks are out of 100

Here are my SAT I Scores:
Sitting 1 Sitting 2
CR 590 670
M 680 640
W 650 720
Total 1920 2030

I plan on taking the SAT Subject tests this October in Maths IIC, Physics and Biology M.

I also have received certificates for/achieved merit in:
- Academic Excellence in Grades 9-11 for coming in the top two ranks in the grade.
- Certificate of Appreciation for Oral presentation on World Events.
-Merit Certificate for participation in Inter School Quiz, Gulf Asian Inter-School Quiz competitions and also for conducting an Inter-House Quiz competition in my school.
- Certificate of Appreciation for Community Service conducted at Labour Camps in Dubai from Grade 9-11.
- Certificate for Best Actor in School Skit competition and also for Writer of the Best Skit.
- Participation Certification for Awareness Walk at Spring Fiesta event.
- Distinction in Mathematics exam conducted by University of New South Wales in 2001.

- Winner of Inter-House Soccer Tournament in Grade 12.
- 3rd Position in 400m-relay in Inter-House School Athletics Meet in Grade 12.
- 3rd Position in 100m-relay in Inter-House School Athletics Meet in Grade 12.

Well, sorry if it is a bit too long, not really sure about what all to include and not to include since I come under the International applicants category. Thanks.

bump bump bump

definitely raise that SAT score up, try to earn some city/state/national awards…they’re always a plus :)

Well Im still planning on enrolling for some volunteer work at the Dubai Autism Centre. I will also appear for the SAT IIs with some high scores as my aim. Hopefully by participating in some more EC’s I can raise my chances you think ?

Are you apply for FA? if you are that is going to hurt your chances a bit.

No actually I’m not gonna apply for FA. But I guess that still doesnt really help my cause does it ? lol, I’m planning to apply for the BME major and given the competitiveness at JHU in that field, I’m guessing its gonna be quite a task to get in huh ? Thanks alot tho

It is going to be quite competitive because applying to BME would be a lot harder than just JHU itself. And I think they would like to have students in the US being BME majors over an international (although that doesn’t mean that they won’t take internationals). But being international is quite tough to get in JHU itself, BME is harder.

However, you have a shot. Best of luck!!!
(P.S. raise that SAT)

do you have any experiences with engineering? or specifically biomedical engineering? where does your interest come from? i think those types of experiences would help

and you need to raise your SAT score, especially in math (bottom 25th percentile for students admitted to hopkins in general is a 690-700). as it stands, the 2030 will be near the bottom 1/4 of all applicants admitted and it seems the numbers rise a bit every year.

Ahh thanks cdz512 and idk …well, I know the SAT Is are a bit low for the JHU applicants pool and given that im international and applying to BME, it’ll be a lot harder. Would you say tho that higher SAT II marks wud improve my stance a bit despite the 2030/2070 (superscored) SAT I result ? Thanks

SAT IIs are a recommended (to me they are seen as a requirement if you using SAT I and if you want to go to a top university). However, seeing that you want to be in BME, I highly suggest, and I mean highly suggest you take the SAT II and try to get the best you can. And yes, the higher, the better. They can boost a low SAT I score but I recommend that you try the SAT I or the ACT (a lot of the people do well). Of course I don’t know about ACT in your country.

From JHU’s website:

“Hopefully by participating in some more EC’s I can raise my chances you think ?”

definitely. but since you want to apply for JHU’s BME department, try to focus on either engineering or BME competitions, projects etc or at least come close to the subject of biomedical engineering.

I, like you, want to apply to BME, JHU being my first choice (and love). But, unfortunately, there is no such thing as (biomedical) engineering competitions in my country. So instead I became focused in the last 3 years of high school in biology, chemistry and medicine (more specifically first aid), participating at Biology & Chemistry Olympiads and projects, FA competitions and training courses, attending medical summer schools and volunteering somewhere where I can use my new acquired knowledge on people who need it.

So just keep being passionate about what you do and want and I’m sure everything will settle for itself. :)

Ahh thanks pisconet_server, got what you mean. I too don’t have many things related to biomedical engineering per se over here. But I guess doing something related to biology and medical procedures might help yes ? I was thinking about signing up for an Observership at a Laboratory in a hospital, my guess is it’ll signify that I am aware of how procedures are carried around in a similar field as BME ? Thanks alot though, and best of luck to you too !

“I was thinking about signing up for an Observership at a Laboratory in a hospital, my guess is it’ll signify that I am aware of how procedures are carried around in a similar field as BME ?”

Sure it will :).

"Thanks alot though, and best of luck to you too ! "
Awww, thanks, same to you! :)

AbhishekShetye - Stop worrying about doing BME related EC, try to pull up your SAT I score first. My DD was admitted to BME this year, and she has no engineering related EC, let alone BME related. Yes, she has tons of other ECs, which you seems to have already, so concentrate more on your SAT, and your grades too.
