Chance for Johns Hopkins ED? Will chance back...

So... (gasp) here it goes.

UW GPA: 3.76
W GPA: 4.63 (it's quirky how my school does it)
BUT I'll have taken 12 APs by the end of senior year (1 Sophomore, 5 Junior, 6 Senior), which will be near the record (if not the record) of # of APs taken during one's high school career at my school, so the rigor of course load is definitely there...
I'm at a normal high school from the Northeast and I'm definitely top 10% of my class.

Senior Year Classes: AP Gov, AP Euro, AP Spanish Lang, AP Microeconomics, AP English Lit, Honors Multivariable Calc (maxed out of BC Calc as a Junior), Honors Physics (scheduling issues prevented me from taking AP Physics), Independent Study in AP Comp Gov sponsored by my school

Scores:
34 ACT Composite
11 Writing
SAT II: Math Level 1- 750, Math Level 2- 780, Chemistry- 730
PSAT: 214 (probably going to become National Merit Commended)
AP: 4 on World History, let's assume of my Junior year classes; 5 on AP Lang, 5 on AP Psych, 5 on APUSH, 4 on Chem, 4/5 on BC Calc

Extracurriculars:

Member of State Advisory Council on Education, vying for a spot on my State Board of Education which would be my dream
Captain of Debate Team
1st Place National Circuit LD Speaker
3rd Place State Champion
Captain of Mock Trial Team
School Newspaper Section Editor
NHS, Spanish NHS, all of the blah "honor" stuff

Essays should be well-written, hoping for superb

Please chance me for Johns Hopkins ED, as well as a few Ivies and 2nd tier schools (NW, Chicago, Wash U., G-Town, Cornell, Tufts, Emory) that I could apply to. Penn is my dream, but I feel it's slowly slipping away from me... ;( But corny pleas for pity will do me no good hehehe... :D

With some really awesome essays and letters of recommendation, I think you have a good chance of getting into Hopkins or any of the 2nd tier schools you listed. Penn might not be quite the stretch you think it is; I would at least try. If you could find a “hook” (internships look nice) this summer before applying, it would bolster your odds at all of them. Best of luck!

really good chance, just keep up your gpa & carefully choose your recs! chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1517796-chance-any-top-schools.html</a></p>

Thanks both of you! And about the hook, LeeMcQueen, I did an internship for the AG of the state the summer after my freshman year, and I’m trying to build a “hook” of an interest and participation in politics and public service (hence the State Board of Ed aspiration). But thank you all so much for the encouragement!

You definitely have a great chance! If Penn is your dream school, apply ED because you definitely look like someone they would want. Just curious, what is your intended major? I think that’ll also show the meaning behind the activities that you’ve done in high school. JH ED also looks very likely. Good luck!

If you have time, could you chance me?

bump bump bump

i think you have a great shot at getting in. id call it a match for ED

Hey thanks for your post! As promised, I’ll chance you.

Two year ago, my friend’s sister also applied for Johns Hopkins ED with similar test scores. She was captain of the marching band, swim team, academic decathlon etc. but she was rejected. Then again, she was an Asian and applying for JHU’s premed program…so the odds were set against her. But guess what? She got into UPENN at the end instead. I say just apply ED if you feel like it :D. Your ACT score is definitely within range. The only thing that concerns me is your SAT II scores. I’m expecting that you’re submitting Math 1 and Math 2? I’d advise you to take some humanities subject test as well for assurance (lit, us history, world history). Final word is to make your essays awesome and get strong recs. Good luck!

JHU ED: Match/High match

JH is definitely doable! Your EC’s are good and your ACT is at their top-end. I didn’t see any volunteer hours though? Maybe I’m missing something :stuck_out_tongue: Also, if Penn is your dream, definitely apply ED. I think this shows the college, especially the very good schools, that you’re not just applying for the name, but because you love the school.

I agree, JHU ED is well within your sights. You’re at the 75th percentile-ish with your ACT , and your ECs are good, with very impressive prowess in debate. Applying ED, I’d call you a match. Penn is of course a crapshoot, but write some standout essays and the chance is there. Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1518818-chance-me-top-universities-low-income-urm.html#post16087021</a></p>

Cousin got in with similar stats, high match at most. Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1519748-chance-me-please.html</a></p>

JHU: High Match
Penn: Reach/ could be low reach if you raise SAT II’s/keep good senior GPA
Chicago: Reach, but your debate skills help here. Chicago’s Model UN team is excellent and is treated like a sport there.
Georgetown: Match again, your interest in debate helps a lot.

If you’ve done Math II, there’s no benefit to sending the Math I score. I would suggest taking another SAT II; some colleges require three, and if you happen to get a score of above 750 on it, you’ll have better chances than if you stuck with your chem SAT.

I would suggest looking at your school’s naviance Scattergrams, if available. Some schools just get more people into one school than another. Look at your school’s historical admit rates, and play to your advantage.

High Match!!

u should try for higher schoolsss

You have great extra curriculars, and an awesome GPA/test score. You have a great chance at the schools you listed as well as 2nd Tiers like UChicago and Northwestern. I’d also say you have a decent chance at the ivies as well, definitely worth applying.

I think you have a good shot for JHU ED
Penn is a reach because your GPA is a little low for ivys

NW, Chicago, Cornell- High Matches
Emory- Match
Johns Hopkins ED- You should get in. Great grades, great ACT score, you should be fine.

Hope you get in  chance me back!
