Hi guys, I'm new here so I apologize first off if my post is in the wrong area or anything.
I'm currently a Freshman here at Rutgers - New Brunswick doing pre-med.
My first semester here.. not very good. Let's just put it that I didn't study properly and as a result I ended up with a pretty bad GPA.

I got:
C+ - General Chemistry
C+ - Calculus
B - Expository Writing
B/C+ - Biology (Final grade isn't up, but my grade may be a C+ or a B)

This is nowhere near what med schools want, but I've heard that the first semester is all about learning to adjust and to make mistakes and learn from them. I definitely learned my lesson, but this puts my GPA at around a 2.6-2.78.

My questions here are, is it still possible to make it to med school in the future, or have I practically doomed myself, considering Orgo and Biochem are known to be very difficult? In terms of motivation, I am fully motivated to do my best, but I just need help here.

Anyone that's been in my position before care to enlighten me? I feel very discouraged, but I still want to go for med school.

Thank you all very much!

Study properly.

You should be fine if you do that.

Calculus and Chem you might need to retake

Would I really have to retake Calc and Chem?.. The C+ grade was considered above average considered to the entire class…

Sorry for the sarcasm. I agree with Nekogami, just cause you were above average doesn’t mean you were med worthy. You should at least have a solid B.

So would getting A’s next semester and the next pretty much mean nothing at all if I got C+s the first semester?

No I think getting As from now on would be good. Not sure though. Not in college haha.

Retake several courses so your premed prereq GPA is at least 3.5. It isn’t necessary that you know these courses well. But medical school is VERY demanding. If you can’t do well with UG courses that are easy, you are basically telling the admission directors that you haven’t demonstrated the ability to handle the voluminous medical school curriculum.

Right. I read that basically doing crappy your first year is your way of saying “I’m not ready at all for the next year”

However, me getting C+s (pretty much borderline B’s, but that’s still no excuse) wasn’t really that the material was too hard or demanding of me, but that I spent my time slacking off instead. I know, a huge mistake but it’s common when you’re given so much freedom in college.

I plan on showing my true potential the next semester, with Chem and Bio II, where I plan on getting straight A’s - no more slacking, no more bull$hit.

Would this at least compensate for the C+s? Not in a GPA sense, but rather show the med schools “Yes, I screwed up, but here’s my true potential”
