Chance for MIT, Caltech, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, Yale?

Hi, this is for my brother :)
Indian Male, higher income bracket
SAT: 2140
SAT 2s: 770 Chem, 800 Math 2, 800 Physics
GPA: 4.3 weighted, 3.5ish unweighted
2 years Frosh/Soph water polo
Science Bowl captain, Science Olympiad
Awards: Tower Award Medals in Chem and Physics

Need more info, like APs, rigor of course schedule, etc. ECs look pretty paltry. If his essay and recs are beautiful he may have a slim chance, but it depends on factors not listed here.

AP Chemistry - 5
Junior year APs: English, USH, Bio, Physics
Senior year: Calc BC, Stat, Euro, English Lit, Environmental

Right now it looks like none of them are going to happen, but he still has another year to improve (do olympiads or research).

He might card a waitlist spot at Columbia, but that’s it…

Low SAT and low GPA.

I’m sorry but I think his 2140 on SAT will ruin his chances

Sent from my Desire HD using CC

^I don’t think a 3.5 GPA would cut it unless if his high school is extremely competitive where kids with GPAs in that realm get into ivies with consistency.

I don’t think the SAT will totally ruin his chances, but the gpa might… What’s his rank?

What’s the SAT breakdown?

What is the class rank or estimated percentile?

top 10% i think

All of them are extremely high reaches. Ideally he would want top 1% with 2300+ SAT to be a competative unhooked Asian applicant.

All of those schools are very high reaches, most likely will be rejected from all.

also, summer engineering program at upenn this summer

I don’t think one can necessarily judge an applicant like this after they pass a certain point. He should just apply and see. No one here can guess accurately and shouldn’t really claim to (I.e: he will most likely be rejected). Just make sure he has safeties lined up.

^ Really? Do you know the competition male Indian applicants face at this country’s best universities? And what ‘certain point’ are you referring to? If you are referring to an academic ‘point’, that would really be top 5-1% of the class, and the op is far from that rank. Nothing listed above is impressive, and indian applicants need to be especially strong and unique to stand a decent chance in getting into those schools.

And your esteemed knowledge…? You’re discounting an applicant who is 10% in his class and has a 2140 on the SATs, enough of your knowledge because it falls short. You can’t predict. So stop trying. No school is a guarantee either way.

Lets see, the schools the OP mentioned generally don’t take unhooked applicants outside the top 2-3 spots. Source? Various books by admissions officers of top schools such as duke and Dartmouth, parent who is a long term high school guidance counselor who knows admissions officers at some of the above schools.

One has to wonder how much you really know about admissions at highly competitive schools.

Well I can tell you that I have more experience then you as my guidance counselor was a dean of admissions at two schools and says everything to the contrary. Yes GPA and sat are big but to say he has a great likelihood of getting rejected here is too much. I know various children who have gotten into Cornell duke (you read a book by this admissions officer??) and vanderbilt with a 29 act. Point is, objective stats are not everything. This is very discouraging to an applicant especially when they can actually be VERY competitive despite what you say.

It sounds like you have similar stats and you’re projecting. Someone in the top 10% and 2140 without anything else has almost no chance at any of the top 10 schools. Even someone with a 4.0 and a 2400 and nothing else has a very distant chance at the top 10 schools.
