Chance for my dream school, Brown?

GPA: 3.8954/4.0 UW, 4.65 W
Rank: 21/474 (top 4%)
AP's: 10 AP's total in just about every subject. I'm taking all of the science AP's available. Junior: 5,5,5,4; Sophomore: 3,1 (in bio and a terrible, terrible day...hope it won't kill me because I did ace the class). Senior year I'm taking 4 more AP's.
ACT: 29 (I know, but I'm praying this won't kill me.)
Hook: Male Hispanic, gay (I love the Brown atmosphere), 1st generation American (my dad had no secondary education & mom just recently got her associate's in 2010), divorced parents (not a hook, clearly).
SAT/SAT II: not submitting

Laureate Candidate '12: The most demanding diploma in our county that requires students to write a lengthy research paper, present it to a panel, and possibly gain scholarship money. The qualifications for getting it are also hardcore. My topic, "This Research Has Been Censored," a look at censorship in film and literature.
Major: Chemistry and Theatre

EC's: President of drama club, president of International Thespian Society, president & founder of science club, president of gay-straight alliance, historian for glee club, academic team member, Key Club member, Laureate Club, and National Honor Society member.
Volunteer: student director for children's drama camp two years in a row (256 hours), countless hours building sets for the school's plays, bake sales, surgical shadowing, student tutoring (every subject), and fundraisers. I also co-created the first district wide dance for GLBT people for a safe gathering.

Awards: Superior, Excellent, and Superior ratings in monologues, excellence in small group musical, superior in duet musical, superior in solo musical, 2 superiors in one-acts at the district thespian festival, and the Florida State Thespian Festival in 2010-11. Drama Department Award at my high school two years in a row, Academic Recognition Award (3 years so far), Best Thespian 2010,11 (school), National Honor Thespian 2011 (school), finalist for Lemelson-MIT project (science club).

Recommendations: Chemistry teacher (wonderful recommendation), AP English teacher (phenomenal recommendation), and Drama teacher of four years (also phenomenal). Even though it's not recommended for the third, I'd like to think she'd write quite differently about me, and reveal a different aspect.

Even with your low ACT, I think you still have a decent shot, especially if you apply ED.

Good luck! Make sure you write great essays!

Because you are URM & gay, you have some hooks working for you which may counteract your weak academic standing. Given the fact that you have decent ECs along with those hooks, it’s not out of reach. Obviously you need a good essay, but academics may be too bad. See if you can re-take ACT in time.

You’re very solid academically. I don’t believe you have to send AP scores, so I wouldn’t worry too much about that 1. If you can get your ACT >31, you’ll have a very solid shot, especially ED. With the score you have now, your chances are still decent, but not phenomenal. Good luck!

Your rank and grades are solid. Do you just not test well?
Honestly I think Brown’s going to love you. You have plenty of hooks and I feel like you’ll have a really interesting app. Best of luck.

Honestly, I don’t test very well for the ACT or SAT… I mean, I can get a 5 in any AP class I want if I put my mind to it, but I just have more trouble with those tests. Hopefully, Brown will be able to look past my ACT score, and just really look at my EC’s, hooks, and essays. I think I wrote really great essays, too. The teachers I had review them commended me and were very impressed & entertained (I add a lot of humor). Do you think that could substantially help my chances?
Also, if I send them updates about certain things I’m doing throughout the year… Would that prove beneficial? Such as a fundraiser I’m doing for Broadway Cares/AIDS, where we donate money to the organization…?

you have a pretty good chance. I would say a low reach just because it is Brown. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1212123-chance-tough-schools-will-chance-back.html</a> Chance back please

Being gay’s a hook? What the ****?

I didn’t say it was a hook, I just put it there because Brown seems to be very liberally oriented, so being gay would probably help them see I’d find their atmosphere comfortable.
I’m sure they’re going to be accepting more liberal, open-minded kids rather than the most conservative of the bunch, and I want Brown to know I’d be a good fit, that’s all.

good chance at all. If you can improve ur ACT scores by a couple of points, ud be set! Good luck!!

If being gay is a hook, I just became it.

Accepted, PLME!

I’m sorry. I don’t think you have chances. Weak ECs+below average ACT score=not happening. The only thing holding you up is your homosexuality and URM. Honestly, that is no where enough to get your into Brown. Good luck though.

I already got in… to Brown… and PLME…
