Finally, the explanation for my GPA. i really want to know if this will make a difference to them...

My freshman year, I missed about a half year of school when my mother passed away from a brain tumor. The two years after that, i spend in and out of different psychologists office to help me recover from this. my grades suffered greatly and i couldn't focus in school. This year, the first quarter and second quarter, i have picked it up and tried to get myself together.

Do i have a chance?

Probably not given all the strong applicants from NJ.

You do have unfortunate circumstances but colleges usually don’t try to parse circumstances. Your best bet is as a transfer. Do well for the rest of HS and for a year at the best college you can get into and then transfer.

^^ Eh, not really.

I’d say you have a decent chance if you apply to LSP. Your SATs are pretty strong and you have a legitimate reason for your low GPA. Quite a few people with similar stats to yours have been accepted to NYU.

I didn’t specifically apply LSP, but doesn’t NYU defer there if they feel you belong there?

And also, if they factor in first quarter grades from my school, i had my full capability on GPA, which was a 4.44 weighted.

Any other opinions?

Well, your SATs are a bit on the low side. The 25%-75% range for SATs and ACTs are 1940-2230 and 29-31, so your 2040 and 29 are in the bottom half. Unfortunately, your GPA doesn’t make up for this either. Yes, you had an adverse situation, but you’ve only managed to pull yourself together academically your senior year (if I’m reading this correctly). An upward trend is good, but your trend starts way too late to successfully convince colleges that you’ve truly changed. For all they know, you could go back to your old ways once you go to college.

If you get in, that’s awesome. I really hope you do. However, should you get rejected, go to another school, and if your academic perseverance continues into college, then try to transfer into NYU.
