Chance for OOS Admission to UGA

Hi all, my son is a Texas high school junior who is going to apply for out of state admission to Georgia as a history major. Can you guys honestly tell me what you think of his chances for admission are based on his current profile? Also, do you think he would be a competitive applicant for Early Action or should he apply during the regular decision so as to see if he can better benefit from the holistic admission process? Also, can you guys comment on whether Georgia offers any specific scholarships to OOS applicants to reduce the cost of out of state tuition?

GPA: 3.7 (w)

Rank: Probably top 30%

SAT: 2070 as follows 790 Critical Reading; 590 Math; and 690 Writing (He plans on taking ACT for the first time in April)

SAT II World History Subject Test: 680 (He will take the US History Subject Test in June 2015)

AP World History: 5/5 (he will be taking the AP US History & AP Human Geography Exam)

Hook: African-American Male

EC: Track freshmen year; Basketball manager sophomore year; and Cross Country junior year.

Part-Time Employment: Since June 2014, he has worked a part-time job working 10-12 hours a week at a fast-food establishment.

Thanks in advance for any advice or input that I receive.

My daughter is an OOS student who will be attending The University of Georgia in the fall of 2015. If you haven’t already, subscribe to Dr. Graves Blog on admissions to UGA it is full of information about the admissions process and may help you decide what your sons chances are and if he should apply early. The stats from this years Early Action class are as follows "similar to last year, those offered admission at this point are academically superior with an average GPA exceeding a 4.0, a mean SAT of 1374 (with a mean SAT writing of 659), or a mean ACT of 30. " This was taken from the press release. They do not have seperate stats for in state or out of state, it makes no difference. UGA also recalculates the GPA so the 3.7 your quoting may be incorrect. They only give .5 weight to AP classes, no honors etc. I have to say I am happy she was accepted EA because I may have been going crazy waiting until this friday for an acceptance. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info @3anddone, respecting the EA admits for last year, it appears that my son’s GPA would be below the mean (possibly substantially); whereas his test scores are slightly above the mean. I think that he will receive an ACT score around 31-32 which once again would result in a slightly higher test score.

I guess we are going to have to determine whether it makes sense to apply EA and keep our fingers crossed that he either is admitted or at the worst is deferred admission to the regular application cycle.

Just to clarify the stats quoted are from this cycle of EA, students entering Fall 2015. Another thing to consider, if you are deferred they do not re-calculate GPA so if he has a great 1st semester Senior year they wouldn’t see it initially in the GPA (at least that is what I understand from the Blog). There is also a small group of admits in February who are generally regular decision admits who meet the EA admission stats or deferred students who have new test scores. Decisions come out this Friday, that should help you determine which application to make, good luck!

Thanks, if there is no chance to re-calculate the GPA for deferred applicants, then its likely we would have to pass on EA and seek admission through the regular admission cycle only. All of my son’s academic courses for next fall are AP classes and its likely he’ll need those credits to put together a competitive application respecting the GPA. I think that this is probably going to be the determining factor regarding when he should apply.
