Chance for OSU

Hi everyone! I’m a rising senior planning to apply for computer engineering at OSU. I was wondering about my chances for getting accepted to the main campus. I am an in-state student, and many people from my HS apply and go to OSU.

GPA: ~3.6 UW, 4.12 W
ACT: 35
SAT II: 800 Math 2, 800 Chem
Full IB Diploma Candidate
Courses: Math, English, CS, Bio (HL), french and psych SL

My extracurriculars are pretty good, and most are related to my intended major. I think that my recs and essay are good too.

Also I was wondering whether OSU would consider me for a second choice major if I’m not admitted for engineering

You’ll be asked to indicate which regional campus you prefer if not accepted at main campus. Marion is the one with engineering classes and a new science building. “Ohio State Regional campuses operate under an open access admission policy. This means that students who have graduated from an accredited Ohio high school or earned their GED have the opportunity to earn an Ohio State education” http://osumarion.osu.edu/future-students/undergraduate-students/requirements/

The university chooses students for the Columbus campus based on their common app, not their intended major.

“Once it is determined that you are admissible, you will be considered for enrollment in the college of your intended major.” http://undergrad.osu.edu/apply/freshmen-columbus/who-gets-in

In other words, if you are accepted to the Columbus campus they would pass your common app along to (in your case) the College of Engineering. The College of Engineering either directly admits you or…

“Students not eligible to directly enroll in the College of Engineering may enroll in Science and Technology and Environmental Exploration (this applies to domestic students only).” https://engineering.osu.edu/academics/admissions

So students that aren’t directly admitted to Engineering "on the Columbus campus must meet these requirements for admission into the College of Engineering pre-major program:

2.5 Ohio State GPA
C- or higher in Math 1151
Credit for one of the following courses: Chemistry 1210, Chemistry 1250, Physics 1250, Biology 2100
1 semester of full-time enrollment as an undergraduate student at Ohio State" https://engineering.osu.edu/academics/admissions

I think you’ll get in, but what I think doesn’t matter. Regardless, there is definitely a path at OSU, even if you aren’t directly admitted to main campus or the College of Engineering.

That’s not necessarily the case at other schools.

If you want to be a Buckeye, you’ll have an opportunity to be one. Whether or not you become one, is up to you.
