I'm currently a high school junior going to be a senior this fall. I've been very much interested in the Medical field and these BS/MD and BA/MD programs are highly appealing. But I'm not so sure if I can get in to these programs. So please chance and I'll chance back!!!

I shadowed 3 different doctors in the summer of my Sophomore year (Got a letter of rec from 2 of them)

Currently I'm doing an research internship at the University of Chicago (my topic is about Cancer)

I'm also involved in the Bio Olympiad in our school

Also in the summer of my freshman year, I helped Disabled students in summer school. I helped them throughout the summer by aiding them in classroom activities as well as entertaining them outside during recess. The teacher of this classroom has written me a letter of rec.

Also in the Winter Break of my junior year I got involved in helping my community. So I met up with a company that would set up water purifiers in small villages in India. There I educated and convinced the local politicians and village leaders about how useful this purification system would be. After 3 weeks of discussion and convincing I was successful. The company that I worked with has written a letter and has kept a log of all the things that I did. They also took pictures of me while doing the work.

2 years of varsity Basketball
2 years of varsity Cross Country

Thats pretty much it. I didn't do anything else besides that. I've been looking at other peoples stats that are applying for the same programs and they have so many awards and their GPA is very high. So please tell me if my stats will give me a chance. Please chance me for PLME; Boston 7 year med; Baylor BS/MD; Caltech with UCSD; Guaranteed Program at University of Pittsburg. Thank you very much.

Your stats look awesome. I think the hours of shadowing and working with the handicap fits well with what you want to do. Other peoples’ credentials make look different from yours, but that doesn’t mean they have a definite advantage over you. Try to write great essays and get really good teacher recommendations. Good Luck :)

Joint BS/MD programs tend to be ludicrously competitive, your 3.57 UW GPA is going to be an issue. Clearly you have an interest and commitment to medicine but I’m not sure if that’s enough for those programs to overlook the lower GPA. Apply to these programs but I suggest researching if you can be admitted to these tracks after you start at a particular school - i.e., if you get a 4.0 freshman year taking a heavy science/math course-load can you become a part of the BS/MD then?

Practical, care to elaborate? Of course these programs are super competitive, but I wouldn’t say the OP doesn’t have a good chance. Test scores are amazing, and the medicine-related EC involvement should help a lot. What did you get that brought the GPA down? Also, just curious, how were you allowed to shadow during sophomore year at 15/16 years old??

Practical, yeah thats what I was worried about because I know that my GPA is horrible. But I thought I could sort of cover it up with high test scores and a lot of extracurriculars. And I shadowed each doctor for about 3 weeks for around 15 hours a week. So total is around 135 hours. And earthsong16, my GPA is like this because I’m horrible in French. This took me down both Freshman and Sophomore year. Also I had a B in Bio first Sem of Frosh year (but raised it to a A in 2nd sem) and B in Chem of 1rst Sem of Soph year (also raised it up to an A in 2nd sem). I improved remarkably in Junior Year. I took AP Chem; AP Bio; AP Stats; Honors English (weighted); Honors Pre-Calc (weighted); and US History. And I got a 4.0 UW both sem. And I shadowed after I turned 16 in the summer of my sophomore year.

I’m pretty sure for plme you have to be in top 2% and for Pitt you have to have a 4.0 so…no good chances there. Even the other programs will have similar cutoffs. Boston is probably the only one which you may have hope for.
