I'm a high school junior and avid golfer. I have been wondering since my stats, particularly my gpa, are rather low, if talking to the golf coach / applying ED would help my chances. Bowdoin is for sure my top choice and I know that could not hurt my chances. I generally can shoot in the low 80s (8.4 handicap.) I know there are much better players out there but on the athletics website, the number six player averaged high 80s.

Here are some of my stats:
GPA: 3.4 UW (I know, low by CC standards)
SATs: around 2100
took APEuro & APUSH, next year taking APStats, APCalcBC, & an AP science

ECs:
staff of newspaper
tour guide
cross-age tutor
mentor at The First Tee
service trip to Spain
caddy at local golf club

F.Y.I. Our golf team was 3rd in our state section this year (PA)

So I guess I am just wondering whether or not golf is a big enough influence on my admissions chances especially for someone of my playing caliber.

Let me know if there is anything else that I forgot,

Talk to Bowdoin’s golf coach and see if he/she is willing to push you through admissions. If the coach really wants you, an acceptance is within reach. However, if you apply without that type of contact, admissions is going to be far more scrutinizing and difficult. Remember, the admissions officers may not be aware what your golf scores mean, they may not realize that you’ll be good for the team, and they may think that you’re no better than the next person on a HS golf team.

To sum it up, if you don’t get recruited, statistics point to a rejection. If you do get recruited, Bowdoin could very well be your home for the next four years. ED should help (as would stellar essays), and many, if not most, recruited athletes apply ED.

@nhdmaniac Chanced you back! But yeah, I totally agree with you. If I don’t talk to the coach, I won’t have an advocate on the inside during the admissions process.

Damn, I’m in the same place you’re at. Low GPA but high SAT score. Try taking some SAT subject tests, colleges usually like that. I agree with nhdmaniac, you should definitely talk to the coach and maybe an admissions counselor. You’re pretty great golf, shooting in the 80s, thats not bad at all. But honestly, I think you have a good shot. With your SAT score, a good essay and some glowing recommendations, you definitely have a good shot. I’d say it’s a mild reach, almost a match. Good Luck. I hope you get accepted!
