I know my GPA is pretty low, but at least my test scores are good.

Dear gmichski : With my second student going through Boston College’s senior year festivities this year (the Sesquicentennial Class of 2013 - will leave you all to check out that hyper-SAT reference), I wanted to kick off my final year here on College Confidential with a review of your profile.

First, you are going to need to provide an explanation of your B+/A- GPA which sports your outstanding Board Scores. Given your AP performance, we have to conclude that you have a natural test taking skill which will work to your advantage - however, the Top 10% criteria in your High School class will still apply. (BC has 80% of the accepted class pulled from the Top 10% of their respective High School classes.)

Second, your club participation is strong, but your demonstrated leadership is weak. What have you led or championed during your High School career? Is there volunteerism missing here that would augment your profile from an impact perspective? Explain your co-founder roles and what impact this might have had on the student body and community as a whole.

Swimming is a grueling sport when it comes to training. Discuss this in more detail. There are many strong schools which sport swimming athletics - would Boston College be the right choice for you if you wanted to continue?

In closing, as we start the new “chance-me” season, you need to answer the question “Why BC?” As we often write, Boston College knows it is a Top 30 national institution - the question to be answered is why you make the Class of 2017 stronger? Have you checked out the extra-essays for this year’s applicant pool? That might help sharpen your focus on these questions.

My lower GPA is probably due to my freshman year. My mother and grandmother both died when I was in 8th grade and I was devastated. I was depressed and I did not perform my best freshman year. It all turned around the past two years. Last year, I got all As or A- except for a B in French.

I actually feel like my leadership is a better part of my application, though, other than a few clubs, it all comes from my swimming. I was elected Captain of two swim teams and I coach another (of which the past two years i volunteered to coach). I volunteered to run the waterfront portion of a local triathlon. I am also head of a few clubs.

I have really no interest continuing swimming in college beyond Club Swimming maybe, which I believe Boston College does not have…

Also, Yes. I am a VERY good test taker.

You have a great shot! Write a quick non whiny explanation about grades on common app. Extra info.
Write great essays! BC loves scores which will help.

I disagree. Much better to let the GC address that issue in his/her rec. College coursework can be pressure-packed. Writing about teenaged ‘depression’ can be a tricky issue. Alternatively, mention it briefly in your main essay, and how it led you to become involved in leadership, etc. In essence, how their deaths helped you to grow as a person and make you what you are today. THAT is what you have to offer the BC community.

Good luck.
