Chance for Rice University

hey-o. I actually already posted this in the Rice forum. Hadn't realized there was a section of this website dedicated specifically to chances. I got just one response on my other thread, so I'm just looking for a few more opinions here. Thanks!

Class of 2013
GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 5.3267
ACT: 34 (English 34, Math 31, Reading 33, Science 36, Writing 8) - one sitting
No SAT or SAT IIs
Class Rank: 22/568 (top 4%)

Previous AP exams: World History (3) and English Language (5)
Also 15 hours of credit from the community college.

Senior course load:
AP Physics C, AP European History, AP English Lit, AP Statistics, and two blocks of Wind Ensemble (1st band)...I have two off-periods - does that look bad?

ECs: Marching and concert band all four years, including being section leader senior year, President of German Club three years, UIL Literary Criticism two years, member of the local county orchestra two years, did volunteer work with the local animal shelter, a charity that records audiobooks for the blind, and a local LGBT film festival.

My essays are both pretty good I think. The Common App one was about prejudices and stereotypes. I spoke about experiencing prejudice due to being a Texan with family roots, but mostly I talked about Islamophobia and how it is an issue of importance to me due to having Islamic family members who have suffered through being stereotyped much more often than me. My supplement essay was about the three years I spent abroad as a child and how it has shaped my perspective and my interests. I get very in detail about specific memories and places and (hopefully) adequately express my eagerness to attend Rice. Feel pretty confident about both essays. The two short essays...ehhh. They are perhaps too short. They are well-written, and they get my point across, but I hadn't really thought of them as short essays as much as short answers when I wrote them. They are each about a paragraph.

My recommendations should be good. The counselor one I've read, looks decent, and the other is from a teacher I've had multiple times who knows and likes practically my whole family.

I've had an off-campus interview that was fairly good, and I've visited the campus. I also have a cousin that graduated from Rice who I listed as a contact. There wasn't any "cousin" option under the section for relatives who had attended. He was president of his college (Jones) if that helps. I dunno if that's something the people on Rice's admission committee would look up, though.

OH. And if it makes a difference, I'm a white female from Texas.

Rice: High match

Do you have a safety?

Yeah, I’ve already been accepted into UT Austin, my second choice, as well as Ohio State and Austin College. Hoping to get into Plan II at UT, though I’ll probably still go there as my second choice even if Honors doesn’t work out. Thanks for the response!

Also, if you have the time and are willing, could you explain why you think I have low chances? I’m thinking in terms of what to improve if I end up going to UT and decide to try and transfer.

Where are you located in Texas in terms of distance to Rice?

I live in Round Rock, which is just north of Austin.

Rice is highly selective, so selective, in fact, that it isn’t a walk in the park for anyone.

True. again, thanks for the response!

@texaspg Why do you ask about location? I mean, besides being from Texas or out-of-state, does it make a difference?

Rice is getting more selective, making it a high match for you.

Is there anything I have that would make me competitive with other applicants to the school, though? Rice is very selective, but they have to let some people in.

Rice is a private school and so in or out of state is not an issue.

The distance from Rice can make a difference since they want to have a diverse group of students. So having 400 students from Texas, most of them from two or three major cities does not help with diversity. So if you are at a distance from Rice, lets say El Paso (750 miles from Houston), it might serve you better than hailing from suburbs of Houston.

Ah, I see. Well, I guess my location isn’t a big plus then. Thanks for the reply!

Wow, threads sure do get buried fast here. Catria and BuBBLES FoR SALE, now that I’m beginning to learn the terminology for this website, I was wondering if either of y’all include “reach” in the spectrum of chances, as opposed to just “low match” or “high match”. 'Cause if you were including “reach” within the options, I would actually feel pretty good about being told “high match”, since in most cases it would be at least a reach.

Going ahead and bumping this. I’m really looking for as many opinions as possible.

A reach is harder to get in than a high match, and I use the term reach sometimes… especially when I have to chance for Ivies on top of non-elite schools (since I refuse to chance people just for Ivies)

Rice is almost like getting into an Ivy, at least on the same level as Cornell pretty much.

It’s a low reach for you, I think you’ll get in, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t

Awesome, thanks for the responses, guys! :)

bumping for funsies and out of boredom. I’m always welcoming more responses!

From high chances you’ll get in to lowest chances of getting in:

Safety
Low Match
Match
High Match
Low Reach
Reach

Sorry, I don’t know much about Rice
