Chance for Rutgers New Brunswick? (Low GPA, Rising)

Hi all, thank you for reading in advance! I appreciate it :)

I'm Asian/American and I'm in state, I've been born and raised in NJ and I'm going into my senior year.
Highschool is a Blue Ribbon School, many kids end up going to IVY and is a great public school. Many get accepted to Rutgers.
GPA: 2.8, expecting to bump up a bit in senior year when school starts. Grades are rising throughout the years. No honors/AP.
SAT: 1710 (Reading: 520, Math: 570, Writing: 650)
Clubs: Not so many, around 5 or so, expecting to do MANY clubs senior year.

Varsity swimmer for 3 years, will be varsity swim team captain next year.
Track runner/thrower for 2 years.
I've done missionary trips for Guatemala, volunteering throughout my town for town events as well as many church events. I do bible readings as well during mass.

Notable info: Grew up single parent household (Father) for my whole life, my Grandmother took my spot as my mother. She had recently passed this year impacting my life a lot, about a week before my mid-term exams at the same time a week before my first SAT (I got a 1550). My dad was a working single parent, working late nights as I cooked my own dinners and regulated time for myself to study on my own.

Essay: Was helped written by my essay editor helper, mentions small things about my grandmother but mostly focuses on what I want to contribute to the campus, it's very short and sweet and to the point. Talks about optimism and remaining positive whilst tackling tough situations.

I thank those who take the time to help chance me, best of luck to you all applying too!

Your GPA is a bit low going into Senior year. I would still apply; your SAT is not bad. It sounds like you are involved in many activities beyond studying. That’s good, but you may have to learn to budget your time in order to get your studying done; you may have to limit your outside activities a bit more.

IF you don’t get in: go to community college for a year or two, save money, and get good grades. Then transfer in as a sophomore or junior. You seem very motivated so I have no doubt that you will be successful in the end.

With a 2.8 unfortunately Rutgers will be more of a reach. (From my high school, only the top 20% get accepted to Rutgers) Why not try other schools like Rowan University, Montclair State, or NJIT? I wish you the best of luck ! :D
