I'm asking for my cousin. He has about a B- average and will be a junior in the fall. He did score a 700 on his chem SAT. If he keeps his grade average at a B or B- average, what is his chance of getting into San Jose state and Cal Poly St. Luis Obispo? I assume San Jose State is a shoo in. He hasn't taken the SAT 1's yet, but I think he'll do pretty good.

Its SAN Luis Obispo…

I have no idea about San Jose…

But what is he planning on majoring in at Cal Poly? That matters a lot.

He wants to major in business.

I don’t know… Cal Poly is getting to be pretty hard to get accepted to. I’m probably just biased because my parents went there and I live in the county haha

I only know about the architecture program and not business, but I suggest that he gets cranking on his grades junior and senior year to boost his GPA, takes as many AP’s as possible, and kicks ass on his SATs…

Best of luck to him!

I don’t think senior grades don’t count. Average GPA at SLO is WELL above B. I think there is a thread around that might give details based on major.

(not by major)

<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

Shrinkrap, I don’t think senior grades count either.
Which makes me reeeeeeeeally sad haha
Because senior year ALL of my classes will be AP and I will hopefully have a 5.0 and it wont count for anything
but yeah, you’re right.

Counts for love of learning, for anticipated course rigor on your application, for getting ready for work in a college environment…all good things…just not for GPA.

Good point

I think my cousin has a B weighted GPA and wants to major in business. So what are his chances at
San Jose State University?
San Francisco State University?
San Diego State University?
Personally, I think both SJSU and SFSU are safeties, while San Diego State is a reach. I pretty much think Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is a super reach.

I think SFSU is pretty easy to get in to, my brother got in for pre-med…

He probably has a pretty good chance there, that’s a good safety.

Oh and my brother had B’s too

Normally SJSU would be a sure thing. However, if you haven’t been watching the news, SJSU is struggling with severe budget cuts. They are preferentially accepting students from the immediate area, and area CC’s first. Since the area has been hit hard financially, this sucks up most of the openings because SJSU is still one of the least expensive places available. So if you’re not from the area (Santa Clara County), add another safety.

SLO is famous for being a tough school to get into. Give it a shot, but don’t count on it.

So it’s early to be looking. Start adding more schools. Also branch out from California, there’s a great big wonderful world out there. You might even post what he wants to study and do in the forums and see if the folks here can give you some directions.

Best of Luck.
