Chance for some top LACs and Unis

I am a white male, rising senior at a large public school that is quite competitive, sends 10-15 to ivies annually.

3.98 UW GPA
4.73 W GPA
I have taken most challenging classes, which in junior and senior year means all IB classes (so I will have an IB diploma).
As part of the IB program you have to write a 3-4k word paper, mine is about the constitutionality of drone strikes.

2310 on SAT I (800M, 760CR, 750W)
SATIIs: 800 on math 2, 730 physics, 700 USH

Extracurriculars:
8 varsity letters: 2 swimming, 2 wrestling, 4 baseball (will be captain sr year)
10 years community swim team
2 years physics bowl
2 years science bowl
2 years in a sports equipment donation club
NHS
Spanish Honors Society
I have worked at several sports summer camps

Service:
I will have 600 community service hours, from many activities. This includes teaching English in DominicanRepublic, singing at a psychiatric hospital, tutoring, etc.
One of my biggest projects (which is ongoing) is starting a baseball camp for elementary summer schoolers in a nearby area with low quality schools...this accounts for 200 of the hours.

Recommendations:
I will get one from my physics teacher, one from my psychology teacher, and one from my theory of knowledge teacher.

I haven't even thought about essays.

If you want more info lemme know. Thanks!!!

Here is my list

Claremont McKenna
Pomona
Stanford (I will probably do SCEA cuz I don't want to ED anywhere and none of the others have EA)
Rice
Haverford
Tufts
Dartmouth
Amherst
Williams
Possibly Emory and William and Mary because they are slightly easier to get into.

Possible majors include Econ, PoliSci, and applied math.

Thanks again.

Honestly, I think you have great chances at all of them, especially CMC, Haverford, and Tufts. Do you have safeties though? Just in case… haha.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1356903-chance-me-lacs-few-universities-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Yea I think I need to find a legitimate safety… Any ideas, based on my list? (similar schools / “overlaps”)

in terms of safeties, you should look at LACs with higher acceptance rates, like macalaster, occidental, trinity (in tx), hendrix etc. just make sure you’d be happy going to your safeties. they need to be schools you like and you’re certain you’re in at.

Bump 10 char

^^ thanks, I will look into those places a little bit more

^^i do not plan to retake.
^ ??

Ignore the poster above me.

Anyways, I think that your GPA and SAT scores would be attractive to any admissions officer. The athletic accomplishments and sheer quantity of service hours is stellar.

That being said, one hole with your transcripts is that you lack a myriad of carefully selected academics ECs that you are passionate about. This may be a red flag: did the sports hook carry you along through your courses? Are you truly passionate about academics?

On a similar note, strengthen writing skills for those college application essays: they are all about how you present yourself. Make those sport situations come to life and capture your essence as a student.

I think with that overall you are a strong candidate. For those Ivys & big Universities, beware. Sometimes admission decisions aren’t made on the strength of a candidate, but on trivial aspects and opinion (this is why back ups are important). I think some posters are hinting that you haven’t addressed financial safeties, which are just as important (if not even more important) than the academic safeties. With the number of higher educations facilities in the world today, there are hundreds out there that any student could take to, but monetary considerations and such must be made. BTW, as an IB candidate, I know that Florida schools love our diploma.

Good luck!

^ “did the sports hook carry you along through your courses?” Whaaaat? Is this Friday Night Lights? LOL, otherwise, sound advice from sagacioustud.

Sagacioustud, thank you for the thoughtful post. If I am interpreting correctly, you seem to be saying that My record does not show a clear academic passion in a certain subject.
I definitely see where you are coming from. Academically, I consider myself well rounded rather than one of those people who focuses extremely on one subject.
I guess physics would be the subject that would appear as an academic passion…the two clubs, and more importantly, a good Rec in that subject.

As far as aid goes, I am hoping that wherever I end up I would get good aid. Most of the schools on my list have great need aid, and if I ended up at a slightly lower tier academic school (which would tend to maybe not meet all need) then hopefully I would be strong enough for some merit aid. Thoughts?

I agree with sagcioustud.

Your ECs are pretty much all over the place. My recommendation would be to apply undecided.

SAT Is are fine, but you should work on raising your SAT IIs. I would work to get the physics and USH to really high (750+) and then only send Phys and USH (If you take IB Math HL, they will expect that you can get 800 on Math II).

As for application, you should try to get recruited for Baseball. If you can get recruited, then the baseball camp you start up will look really really good. Other than that your, ECs are only ok especially if you don’t have any awards for competitions.

I would categorizing your school list as follows

Claremont McKenna - Match
Pomona - Low reach/high match
Stanford - Reach
Rice - LR/HM
Haverford - No idea…
Tufts - LR/HM
Dartmouth - LR/HM
Amherst - LR/HM
Williams - LR/HM

I would recommend you look at getting recruited, because if you can get recruited, then your basically in everywhere except for maybe Stanford. Also, since you only every apply to college once, you might as well try for HYP. Basically a lot of it will depend on how you come off on your essays. You definitely have a great shot at all these schools! (Your probably the smartest athlete I have ever seen on CC)

Good luck!
Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1355507-new-sat-score-chance-rising-senior-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thanks. I am trying to get recruited, this summer is the main time for that process (skills video, showcases, etc). Right now I do not know for sure, but by the end of summer I will have a good idea of where I could play and how big athletics would be in the admissions process.

I am going over to your thread now

Bumpitty bump

Buuuuuuuump

For a safety might look at Holy Cross-plays Dartmouth in most sports. HC(don’t have to be religious) has a great campus only 1 hour from Boston. Holy Cross also has one of the better alumni networks for job placement.

I will do some research on it. Thanks

Bump. . . . . .

Bump bump bump

Bump ten char

Hi! I’m only really comfortable giving chances for 3 of the schools on your list (don’t have personal experience with the others).

Tufts - I agree with what others have said that it’s in between a reach and match. As an alum, my bit of advice is to not put poli sci on your application (they ask for what you think you might want to major in). Tufts has a lot of poli sci kids, so in order to provide diversity, you might want to just say applied math or quantitative econ since they will love your high SAT scores for that.

Williams - Reach/match. I have a few friends who played sports here, and you’ll definitely want to get in touch with the baseball coach, since a large percentage of their students/applicants are athletes, and you want to make sure you’re included in that admission cycle.

Emory - match/safety. This is definitely the safest school on your list, though obviously not safe overall. Still, I think you stand a VERY good chance of getting in.

Just in case though, look at Bates, Trinity, Skidmore, and Southern Cal. Bates and Skidmore are good backups for schools like Williams/Amherst/Dartmouth. Trin Coll is a good back up for Haverford. And USC is safer than Stanford or Tufts (though this one is getting much tougher each year).
