Son a junior in excellent public high school in MA. Has a 4.7 weighted GPA (out of 6.0) – have no idea how this translates on the 4.0 scale but he is a solid B student, having taken 3/4 of his classes at the Advanced level. Will take 3 APs next year (Bio, Stats, Latin); President of Latin Club; varsity golf and crew; few other clubs at school throughout high school and has done a bit of volunteering.

School doesn’t rank but he’s in top 30% (75/260).

SATs: 700M, 620CR, 520W – will take again in June.

Also, not applying for financial aid – does this even matter?

Both father and grandfather went to BC – does this matter at all?

Sounds like he has an excellent chance. Hopefully his reading score will go up and his SAT IIs are solid. You should encouage him to take the ACT, if it does not go well, I do not think they have to send it. Not sure of legacy situation at BC, since it did not apply to my D. Suggest beefing up the volunteering ASAP, so whatever he decides to do he can claim for jr and sr year on his application. Maybe Special Olympics?

Boston College does not take solid "B" students unless they have extraordinary extracirriculars/life circumstances. Also, BC likes to see you at least in the top 15% of your class.

If the B's are in AP classes it might be ok (depending on how hard your H.S. is). Some h.s make it impossible to get an A in an AP and the colleges know this. The rank however is more telling. He still has a couple of semesters if he can try to raise his average a little- even to top 25%, it would help. Agree on the EC's- needs to really stand out there. good luck!
