Chance for Stern vs. CAS

NYU is one of my top-choice schools - and until very recently it seemed natural that I would apply to Stern because I am wanting to go into business, but the thing is that my business interests are more in the arena of communications/marketing/advertising/PR and not finance, and not only is Stern incredibly difficult to get into to begin with, but something like 70% of the grads go into finance and that's not my end career goal in business, even though I know finance classes will be inevitable. I want to have some interdisciplinary study, such as potentially minoring in Spanish.

I am really interested in NYU as a school in general, not just for Stern - the study abroad program is incredible and I want to spend at least a semester living in Spain, I have visited NYU's campus and I love NYC and the diversity of the campus! I don't want to ruin my chances of getting into NYU at all by trying for Stern when I'm not 100% for it, and I know I can still study business at CAS (the things I really want to study like marketing etc.) and have more liberal arts in my education, which I would like.

I am wondering if CAS might be more of a target for me than Stern.

-I am an IB diploma candidate; taking IB business as one of my HLs
-3.9 unweighted GPA; school doesn't do weighted
-top 10% of my class (suburban public school very competitive, class of almost 500)
-SAT reading 750, math 690, writing 730 = 2170 overall
-I qualified for DECA nationals for 2 years in a row; State Champion sophomore year and 4th-place at state junior year
-VP of community creative writing club where I help teach writing lessons to younger students
-Secretary of my hometown's youth government board
-I have been employed at the same place since my sophomore year
-significant community service; worked in summer school classrooms helping elementary schoolers for 3-4 weeks every summer for 3 summers; junior counselor for 4 weeks at a camp last summer; I have volunteer-tutored elementary schoolers every week since freshman year
-I was selected as HOBY ambassador from my school in 10th grade
-Student Trustee at my hometown's schools foundation: I represent my school at events, attend board meetings and am learning a lot about how nonprofit businesses work
-I love writing and consider myself a strong writer
-I am from Washington state

Let me know! Thanks for reading all this :P

I was in the same position as you (I’m even also a diploma candidate). When I first started looking at NYU a year back, I was interested primarily in Stern because I’ve always been interested in business. What I really wanted, though, was a more flexible and well-rounded education where I could study business and other interests in conjunction.

Hence, I applied ED1 to CAS just this month for Economics. The Economics program is shared and said to be more “flexible”, in that it isn’t necessarily tailored to the pre-natal Wall Street junkie. Also, there are two cross-school minors at Stern: one on entertainment business (which is what I’m interested in) and one on general business (it’s hosted by CAS in conjunction with Stern).

I think you could reach for Stern, and you definitely are a pretty good match for CAS. In the end, it’s all about what you want to study. It seems like you would do well at CAS, in my opinion.

Thanks! Good to know. On common app for NYU, they ask about your choice of alternate schools within NYU, but is there even a possibility of them putting me into one of those alternates if I don’t get into Stern?

Apply to CAS. You will most likely be rejected by Stern given your SAT scores. Apply to CAS and try to transfer after a semester (if you have a high math/econ grade transferring is easy to Stern. I did it myself two years ago.)

I think you are fine for either as long as your essays are good. But, Stern is a reach for almost anyone. But that could change with ED2
