Hi, I'm a junior in a highly ranked public high school.(I believe the top public school in the state at the moment)
I have a 35 ACT (34 English, 35 Math, 36 reading, 34 science)
Also around a 4.0 UW GPA,
With my grades for this year in AP Chem and AP Lang around A's and A+'s in all science and math honors classes. Planning on taking all the AP science and math classes at my school. I have some solid EC's and I will have plenty by senior year: 4 years varsity sailing team(maybe 2 years captain) also 4 years of competitive summer sailing(non school) and offshore sailing, 2 years of solar car team, 2 years of school show choir, and 2 more of a private advanced choir with many extra choir options such as a Capella and swing dancing with a potential for a leadership position in both choir and solar car senior year. What are my chances for top engineering options such as:
Princeton
MIT
Stanford
UC Berkeley
Cornell
Wash U at St Louis
and any other options you can think of
Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Are you good enough to be recruited by Stanford sailing team?

I’m not sure, I’m a 4 year varsity but there are some really great sailors that sail at a much higher level but it is a possibility if I can get to some top tier regattas

You might want to approach the coach to support your app. I believe you might be allowed to contact a coach now as opposed to having to wait until application season.

Thanks! I’ll look into it further.

Your ECs are bit lacking. I think these schools like prestigious awards more than activity commitment. Either way, your stats are obviously in range for all of them, but the lack of strong ECs and hooks warrants conservative estimates.

Princeton: high reach
MIT: high reach (MIT emphasizes math and engineering awards which you are lacking)
Stanford: high reach
Berkeley: in-state: match; OOS: low reach
Cornell: low reach
WUSTL: low match, but seriously, it’s not in the same tier for engineering as the other schools you’ve listed

Anyone else have any input on my chances?

A reach at princeton/mit/stanford, it would be beneficial to have e.c. that favor science/engineering?

Thanks smarty99, I have the solar car team, but I will look for other opportunities

What about UPenn?

I’d look at it this way, if you are a junior than technically you have all the way through the fall of your Sr year to add to your resume. We just came back from touring MIT and Northeastern, and what I’ve discovered is that it pays to go on a formal tour at the school you are very interested in. Check out the admissions web page on the school site. But if you can’t do a tour, the other thing that I have noticed is that the student ambassadors at the schools are very motivated to answer all your questions. Contact the admissions office and ask to correspond with a student ambassador, they may have a program that facilitates one on one communication with perspective students. The admissions counselors are also available too via email. I would just caution you to carefully construct your questions and email, you want to always make an impression.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I actually just got back from Boston, I was visiting a brother who goes to BC, but I couldn’t get a MIT tour because it was their break, but I am returning and I will look into tours, thanks again!

I think you have a very good chance…but remember, it’s a crap shoot, so even if you have the stats and ECs, there’s still no guarantee. Look for match schools that you LOVE as well as a safety you LOVE.

My son’s girlfriend has similar stats and is a captain of the sailing team and just got accepted into Princeton. You will need a strong community oriented activity. She is president of the diversity counsel and travel to different conferences around the country. I hope it helps.

Thanks! It’s really reassuring to know that I have a shot, even if it’s a crap shoot

Does anyone know what my chances would be at dartmouth? Or can add any information on the schools I’ve listed? Thanks in advance.

Anyone else have any feedback? Anything you have to say is appreciated

I hate to do this, but, bump

MIT, Stanford, Princeton, and Dartmouth are reaches, the rest are solid matches.

You’ll definitely be a competitive applicant at all of these colleges, but nothing is guaranteed. Make sure you apply to at least one safety school!
