Chance for Top Schools- Will Chance Back!

Hi, everyone. I'm wondering if you would all be able to chance me on a few schools I'll be applying to in the fall.

Most of the following items below will stay the same except for my SAT II scores. I'm planning on retaking SAT II for Math II in October as well as physics (first time). Thanks in advance!

Please chance me for each of the following:
- UGA Foundation Fellows
- GA Tech
- Emory
- Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science)
- NYU
- Duke
- UPenn (Jerome Fisher is a dream)
- Columbia
- Harvard

Standardized Testing:
SAT I: 2330 (770 CR, 760 Math, 800 Writing)- Should I retake?

- I scored 5's on the first two exams and am currently waiting for the results of the rest. I expect 5's on all my exams except maybe Bio which I may have gotten a 4.

All my other classes are gifted classes (more difficult than honors at my school) with the exception of two years of Latin because Gifted Latin is not offered. Also, IB is not offered at my school.

Senior Courseload:
- AP Psychology
- AP Government/AP Macroeconomics

- 300+ Hours of Community Service
- I have been programming since 4th grade as a side hobby (self-taught)
- Voluntarily began a small SAT tutoring program free of charge to local high school students
- President of Imagination Revolution: This is a recent student-run, nonprofit organization with a decent amount of publicity and credibility locally. 2010-2011 school year was it's first year of operation where I helped in starting the program. The goal is to promote arts (visual, dance, music, composition, theatre, and martial arts) to young children (primarily in elementary school) since a lot of local elem. schools are now cutting these things due to the recession. I've invested all of my time in this as president. We're gaining much local/state credibility as well as news coverage for this program.

Other:
- Future plans: Ideally, I would study under a dual degree program in both computer science and finance at either UPenn or CMU.
- State: GA
- School Type: Public
- Ethnicity: Asian
- Gender: Female
- Income: Approx. $80k-90k
- Hooks: First generation college student, Founded a successful/credible local non-profit program
- I've also struggled with some serious personal/family issues throughout my childhood that I'm not comfortable posting on here, but most likely I will write about under the special circumstances or essay portion of my applications.

Chance me please (I'll chance back ASAP if you leave a link).
And if there's anything you think I can improve on statistically, please let me know!

UGA lock

GA Tech in

Emory match

Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science) match

NYU in

Duke low reach

UPenn (Jerome Fisher is a dream) mid reach

Columbia low reach

Harvard mid reach (these dudes are a crapshoot)

I see that you and I are somewhat similar in courseload though you are above me in the SAT I. I love your ECs and your variety. You’ll go far!

You have a good chance at everything, except Harvard since it’s Harvard. I would retake Math IIC. Use Kaplan! I thought it was very thorough and similar to real test.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1164754-chance-columbia-upenn-uchicago.html</a></p>

You don’t need to retake the SAT I lol. Don’t worry.

Harvard would be the only one to worry about just because it is highly selective and unpredictable. Don’t retake sat 1 but I think you need three sat subject tests for some of those. You have strong ec’s and a great variety of awards, and your academic stats really couldn’t be any better. You deserve admission everywhere so just apply and things will work out well!!!

As the others have said, your statistics are great besides your SAT IIs. Perhaps you can retake them, but other than that there’s no need to retake anything else.

UGA - in

GA Tech - in

Emory - match

Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science) - match

NYU - in / low match

Duke - high match / low reach

UPenn (Jerome Fisher is a dream) - mid reach

Columbia - low reach

Harvard - reach, simply because it’s Harvard.

Good luck on your applications! Chance me back please.

You definitely do not need to retake SATs. Congrats on great stats!

-UGA in

 • GA Tech in
 • Emory match
 • Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science) honestly, i don’t know
 • NYU match
 • Duke match
 • UPenn (Jerome Fisher is a dream) reach
 • Columbia low reach
 • Harvard reach

GA Tech-in

Emory-match

Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science)-match

NYU-match

Duke-between reach and match

UPenn (Jerome Fisher is a dream)-reach

Columbia-reach

Harvard-Between low reach and reach

-UGA Foundation Fellows- in

 • GA Tech-in
 • Emory-match
 • Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science)- in
 • NYU- in
 • Duke- low reach
 • UPenn -reach
 • Columbia-reach
 • Harvard -reach

I hate to label the last 3 schools reaches for you but we all know how admission is unpredictable for these schools. But being a very capable first generation college student with such impressive records I can’t see what will be stopping you

Oh and write some awesome essays
All the best :)

No need to retake the SAT I, but definitely retake Math II, especially since math was your lowest score on your SAT I.

UGA - in

GA Tech - in

Emory - low match

Carnegie Mellon - match

NYU - in / low match

Duke - high match

UPenn - reach

Columbia - reach

Harvard - reach

if you really want to go to UPenn, do ED b/c the acceptance rate is 31% compared to 14% usually.

For the last three schools, it comes down to writing a really unique essay, which you pretty much already have down w/ your personal/family issues.

Good luck on your future endeavors!
Thanks for the chance.

UGA Foundation Fellows -in

GA Tech -in

Emory -in

Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science) -in

NYU -in

Duke -in

UPenn (Jerome Fisher is a dream) -low reach

Columbia -high reach

Harvard -mid reach

I’d say you’re in almost for sure at all those schools but the Ivies. Your SAT scores, GPA, ECs, and awards are all spectacular.

A good number of kids from my school get into the Ivies, and I have to say, they are all unpredictable. The three kids who got into Harvard this year from my school all had SATs scores well below 2300. Two had in the 2100s, and the third had a low 2200. There were kids with higher SAT scores than them who got rejected by Harvard.

Columbia seems to be extremely picky with their admissions, but I still think you have a great chance. I think Harvard is a better shot than Columbia and a better shot out of all the more prestigious Ivies (like Princeton and Yale) though because they seem to take a larger variety of students. Columbia wants high SATs and large number of APs, whereas Harvard takes across the board. I honestly think all the Ivies are just random at this point, because there seems to be no pattern in their admission acceptances. I know people who got 2400 on their SAT, 4.0 UW GPA, 10+ APs, etc etc and still didn’t get accepted into some Ivies, whereas they got accepted into others (and they weren’t rejected from all the higher ones and accepted into all the lower ones, or vice versa… it was a mix). It’s just random.

Anyway, I think you’re best shot is at UPenn because it’s a bit easier to get into than Harvard and Columbia. Second best shot, Harvard. And Columbia being the hardest.

You just don’t know anymore with these prestigious schools. The rest of those colleges I’d be surprised if you didn’t get into.

Chance back please? =]

Academics: Somewhat strong. SAT I is good (don’t bother re-taking), but focus on SAT IIs. This is the main detractor. Otherwise, gpa is also good. May I ask hoe competitive your schools is (how many normally go to top schools?)

ECs: OK. Leadership ok. Dancing sets you apart a little. Otherwise kind of standard (don’t really see anything that shows your passion for CS or Finance). I guess not really too much of a clear focus. And it’s prob. irrelevant to write about childhood issues unless it has affected your academic performance (which it probably hasn’t).

Harvard and Columbia are definite reaches, Fisher too. The Other schools should be fine for you. Really work on essays though.

Thank you everyone for your opinions! I’m definitely going to retake my Math II SAT (aiming for an 800). I’m also going to take the Physics SAT II test (aiming for 750+).

@aznxkiwi- I plan on EDing to UPenn simply for the JF program.

@PC3394- Your advice was definitely much appreciated!

@dblazer- In terms of competitiveness, only the top students at my school go to top schools (or even have a shot). Generally speaking, this would be the top 10 students. Also, I’m minoring in computers at GHP. My childhood issues are actually what inspired me to start Imagination Revolution which is definitely a credible program locally. We teach over 60 elementary students per year without any sort of payment, etc.

Great chance for most of those schools!

UGA fo sure in

GA Tech definitely

Emory pretty good match

Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science) match

NYU yep, for sure.

Duke pretty good match/low reach

UPenn - somehwat reach ( I mean it’s a reach for anyone since it’s an IVY)

Columbia - low reach

Harvard - reach but still a chance!

Don’t worry about retaking the SAT - your SAT II scores are pretty good - Retake math if you want but you really don’t need to. and your ec’s and awards are frickin awesome. DEfinitely apply ED to UPenn.

GOOD LUCK!!
Chance me back please?? Appreciate it :]

I would say:
UGA: You’re definitely going to get accepted, but getting the Foundation Fellows programme invitation is less certain. But, most likely.
GA Tech - definitely in.
Emory: high match, most likely in.
Carnegie Mellon (School of Comp Sci): high match
NYU: In
Duke: mid-reach (for everyone)
UPenn: low reach
Columbia: high reach
Harvard: high, high reach
The last two apply for anyone.
Your SATs are great (10 pts higher than mine. :().

UGA - safety

GA Tech - safety

Emory - low match

Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science) - low match

NYU - low match

Duke - high match

UPenn - low reach

Columbia - low reach

Harvard - reach

I agree with most everybody else; you’re a lock for most schools like UGA, GA Tech, etc., but the Ivys are a little bit of a reach. I think you’ll get into Penn and Columbia though, just my thoughts.

id say youre in everywhere except harvard, penn, duke, and columbia, which could go either way. of these, id say penn is the most likely to accept you.

GA Tech-in

Emory-match

Carnegie Mellon (Tepper and School of Computer Science)-match

NYU-match

Duke-between reach and match

UPenn (Jerome Fisher is a dream)-reach

Columbia-reach

Harvard-Between low reach and reach

Great stats plus a ton of ECs. You’re well set :)

Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1166769-sats-so-chance-me.html</a></p>
