I want to go into Animal Sciences and eventually veterinary school, do I have a decent chance?
out of state, Florida specifically
Your SAT is not strong, so it will be difficult since studies in veterinary science are competitive.
Are you also aware that you will be paying full fees? Can you afford $55k per year? There are no scholarships and limited financial aid for OOS residents.
you really think my scores are weak, I thought they were about average for Davis
You need to bump up your SAT score to around 2000+ since Animal Science at UCD is very competitive. You also need to calculate your UC GPA (10-11th grades for the a-g course requirements). You get extra honors points only for AP/IB classes taken 10-11th grade since you are an OOS applicant.
As stated above by @aunt bea, the UC’s are expensive for OOS students, so if you plan to attend Vet school, you probably want to keep your undergrad costs as low as possible.
Average UC GPA for UCD: 4.07
Calculated UC GPA: 3.2, wow hard to believe
As an OOS applicant, you need a 3.4 to apply to the UC’s or your application will not be considered. Are you sure you did the calculation right? You have take 4 AP classes, so you should get all 8 extra honors points.
Ooooh ok I just redid it, I incorrectly calculated it 3.54
You make the cutoff, but your UC GPA is on the low side to be competitive. UCD will be a tough admit.
any other UC’s you would recommend
Cal Poly Pomona and San Luis Obispo would have Animal Science majors but both schools are impacted so competitive admits. UCR, UCSC or UCM would be UC’s where your stats would be competitive but does not have Vet/animal science majors. Why California?
Agree with @Gumbymom on schools. Why CALIFORNIA?
Your GPA and SAT will not be competitive for most of the UCs. Riverside is out in the sticks-horrible traffic with all of the industrial trucks and farm equipment. Merced is in an up-and-coming area but is in the middle of farmland with no direct access.
Paying full fees yearly at $55k and completing Vet School will be extremely expensive. (You won’t gain instate residency during your stay because you are coming to California for educational purposes. The universities are strict and unyielding to people with an OOS transcript.)
You are well qualified for most of the CSUs. Chico and Fresno both have very solid Animal Science programs. I imagine Merced has a solid program too. All 3 are a long way from the beach…
You are a reach for most of the UC’s except for merced.
Your senior year schedule is pretty easy. Only 1 AP senior year? Can you test out or skip pre-calc and take calculus?
last year I had two and it was pretty overwhelming. My school is known for having very rigorous workloads and courses even at the Honors levels. My Anatomy course and AP Lit and are known to be the hardest Science and English course you can take in the school. So basically in my school my schedule is considered challenging.
and to answer your question, Why Cali? I just started considering UC’s because my cousin who graduated this past year goes to Berkley and she’s pushed me to look more into schools over there.
Unfortunately, your SAT score and your GPA don’t reflect that rigor, and that’s what the UCs expect and how they admit students; its based upon GPA and SAT.
Also, the UC’s do not use Affirmative Action to admit students since its against the law, so the race/ethnicity isn’t a hook.
Since the California public schools are funded by the tax paying residents, priority goes to instate students.
Can you afford $55k per year?. There are no scholarships for OOS students.
Ya you are right, I havent really thought about the money much. This was just a recent thought. No UC is near the top of my college lists, it was just a considerstion
