Chance for UC's (LA or Berkeley) help ;[

Sooo, the typical post about chances... I never really stressed until now. Maybe because I never really tried in high school ;[. Well here are the stats.

GPA: 3.62 unweighted, 3.91 weighted
AP's: AP Environ. Sci - 5, Physics B - 5, Physics C: Mech - 4, Physics C: EM - 4 (self-studied)
SAT's: SAT1 - 2180, Physics - 780, IIc - 800
Some special stuff: Northwestern 8week summer school program, took Calc1 and Calc2 sophmore summer, A and A-. Creator of a club, internship at electrical engineering company (I'm applying for engineering)

Essay: pretty good

Some bad: I got a C in English 3 H/IB (it's weighted), wrote about it in my personal statement. Many many absences (75 last year, around 15 this year already) that I just found out is on our new school transcript.

don't really know much else... let me know if I'm missing anything! Thanks!

Oh also... my counselor won't write me my reccomendation, and it's required for most privates... anyone know what I can do? Thanks!

are you from cali?

yeah I live in California

whats with absences?

How do you get 75 absenses on a 180 day school year

They better not see your absences, that's quite an achievement, not getting an F with all those. You are close to the average admit line with those stats however.

GPA is a bit low for the average at UCB and UCLA. Other stats look fine.

I honestly don't know how I got the absences... I didn't feel like I ditched that much, but I had to have a meeting with the district and they pulled my file which showed what added up to like 78 full days or something like that; I had to sign a legal contract to attend school and such. Shrug... just never really liked wasting time in class. So would both UC's be a slight reach then? ;[... Should I even bother applying to the privates (Upenn, Northwestern, Stanford, USC) then?

I actually did receive 2 D's in both my Physics junior year (I took B and C at once) but the teacher had a grade change policy with the AP tests, so I got it up to 2 A's and 2 B's. Same with APES.

UCB: Slight Reach
UCLA: 50/50 shot of making this.

Mmm... alright then ;]. Thanks a lot! Is there anything I could possibly write on the appeal letter? (Just preparing ;x.) I'm taking a class at a local Community College right now and some other little things... what's the best thing to write about on appeal?

Also, I just realized that I forgot to write about the EM self study test on my personal statements, would they know? Or do they not really even check AP tests until later? Thanks ! :D

slight reach means...under 50%?

Uhh good question actually... I don't really know. Anyone?

bump... anyone else? ;[

Sorry bro, Cal and UCLA seem to be a bit out of the question with that GPA of yours.

While your SAT is impressive, that GPA hurts badly especially since you are applying engineering.

I would say, however, that you seem to be a decent match for UCSD engineering.

Despite your GPA, best of luck. Also, Engineering admissions tends to be a bit more random than admissions to other colleges at UC Berkeley. GPA and SATs do matter, but they look especially at the science stuff which you seem to be fairly decent at.

It will be a tough reach, but still not an impossibility.

Oh man... that's not good news... would it be better if I switched my intended major or something? I figured I had a lot of science oriented classes and tests and things... would be kinda weird if I applied for anyhting else. But if it would help I don't mind switching.

And also, what are all the percentages and things for the slight reach and whatnot? Thanks again!

ermidnite:

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach (Engineering)

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match
