Your GPA tends to be the worst factor making the higher tier UC’s more difficult. Your SAT is also average, but if you can bring it up to the 2,000’s or even 2,100’s it would greatly improve your chances. Good luck!

A UC GPA less than 4.0 for most of the UC’s will be a problem for an Engineering Major or CS.
My younger son had a UC GPA (capped) 3.73/3.97 (Uncapped) and ACT of 31 last year (10 AP’s/2 Honors classes). Denied SLO/UCI/UCSB/UCSD for CS, but accepted at UCR with Chancellors Scholarship, SJSU,SDSU,CPP,CSULB,CSUF.
Even if you bring your SAT score above 2000, the top tier UC’s will be out of reach.

For the Cal States, calculate your EI index: (UC GPA (capped) x 800) + (SAT Math + SAT CR) or (UC GPA (capped) x200) + (ACT composite x10). If you have a EI of 4100+ (SAT) or 1000+ (ACT) you have a good chance at SDSU and CPP.

I plan to major in computer science but i was advised to apply for the “easier engineering majors” in order to get into the schools. Is it better for me to just apply in Comp Sci? @DrGoogle is LS comp sic easier to get into than the school of engineering Comp Sci? @Gumbymom My EI is 4100+ at the moment, How do the Cal Poly’s determine GPA? I don’t count on getting into UCLA UCB or UCSD with a GPA as low as mine, I would be satisfied with getting into UCSB. @Fysiks how high a SAT for UCSB?

For UCSB, you want to aim for a 2100+ SAT to offset the lower GPA. This is no guarantee since your essays and EC’s will also factor into your application.

@Gumbymom do I stand a good chance with SB considering my extracurriculars are strong and I am spending lots of time on my essays? I’m shooting for a 2100 on the upcoming SAT

UCSB would still be a reach due to your GPA but a strong SAT score and essays will definitely help. If you get in, I predict you will be placed into an alternate major or undecided. CS will be hard to transfer into later but you can only try your best.
