Applying to CSE
Not really sure how the honors college works for UMN so any advice is really appreciated
My in state DD19 was offered Honors College in CSE with same ACT, 4.0UW GPA, and good ECs. I think you have a decent chance, but have been told that Honors College is based on who is admitted into that College. CSE has the highest ACT/GPA so the competition may be higher for this program.
FYI, she is in her first year. She opted not to live in Middlebrook, the Honors dorm. Overall I think that she has seen minimal benefit to being in the Honors Program so far. Partly that may be because she has not taken advantage of opportunities? But also I think U of MN does a great job with all students regarding advising and support, so the baseline is high for academics and support. She is also a student athlete, which gives additional academic advising and support.
My son was just offered Honors College CSE over the weekend with similar stats. 3.99 GPA, 34 ACT, class rank 1/82 (very small high school), decent ECs, ok essay. Only 5 AP classes offered at his school, so I was afraid that would hurt him, but it must not have.
I would think you have a good chance. From what I’ve read, Honors college students have a second “honors” advisor and the honors classes are smaller.
I think you have a good chance. But honestly, I feel like honors is least important for CSE. It’s fine if you aren’t offered honors too. All of CSE is pretty much honors quality students.
I was admitted a few days ago into the Honors College CSE myself. I had nowhere near the qualifications you have, so I’m sure you’ll have a pretty decent chance of getting in.
