Chance for UNC Wilmington, ODU

Honestly, I’m not too familiar with those schools. Their average is in the low-mid 3.0 area, and you have pretty good everything, so I say you should stretch yourself a little further.

UNC Wilmington — try applying there.

Have you considered North Carolina Central University? They’re pretty good, too.

^ No offence folks but it’s a little upsetting to see so many people responding to a very specific question “Chance for UNC Wilmington, ODU” with information that obviously comes right from the internet.

Thank you to the members who at least said “I’m not familiar with your schools”.

As for “Have you considered North Carolina Central University? They’re pretty good, too”. what exactly do NCCU and UNCW have in common other than they are both UNC System schools? You would have to look long and hard to find two schools that are more different from one another. Not that one is better and one is worse but very very different in almost every way…

I’m not familiar with ODU, but I think you can get into UNCW. Students are our high school in MD seem to get in pretty easily. I think they have rolling admissions, so I recommend applying early. Have you considered JMU?

Why are you interested in UNC-W? The standards for in-state students are vastly lower than your stats. Still, outside of UNC-CH, I imagine UNC ancillaries are more than willing to accept OOS students who are willing to pay full freight.

Yes, I have considered JMU, but its only about 25 minutes away from where I live and I’d like to go farther away from home. Also I’m not too fond of the campus, or the city its in (Harrisonburg). So aside from academics, it doesn’t offer anything that I really like… and I’m not going to apply there if I would hate it for four years.

UNCW is in Wilmington, and according to one of my best friends who grew up close to there, its a beautiful town. It has a good nursing program and is also right by the beach, which gives it a definite plus. I’m going to go visit there in a few weeks, we have a campus tour booked & everything, so I’m hoping I’ll see for myself if I reallllly like it. But right now, just the general opinion that I have been getting from people is that Wilmington is a really nice college town w/lots of stuff to do and all the academics I’d want.

…Bump!!
I’d really like to know more people’s opinions.

I just find NCCU more focused in nursing — and could give a contrasting feel to UNC Wilmington. Haha

As for Wilmington being a good fit for you, a school can have a nice beach and a nice nursing program but its quality of lessons may not really be ‘suitable’ for you. (I am thinking of the level of rigor that you might consider, as well as the existence for good students like you, who may like honors programs) It is basically lifestyle vs lessons… Just make a choice.

Anyone else have any insight? Bump

Oh and btw, I’m not really interested in any type of honors programs. I am considering joining a sorority though, because I love volunteering & most sororities really get involved with community outreach. Other than just that, sororities offer a great social environment and you have the opportunity to make friends and get involved in lots of different activities.

“It is basically lifestyle vs lessons… Just make a choice” -

Not So… UNCW is a very good school and the Nursing, Marine Science, Education, Film, and Business programs are well respected. Please stop giving advice about schools that you obviously know nothing about… It’s misleading and not helpful.

It seems like most of you think I should be aiming higher for academics, although I am very interested in UNCW & ODU. So if you could just chance me for those two places it would be great.

Very few people are focused in the school choice they make. Too often, people try to aim so much in the name, in the prestiges of the school they go to. I am glad you’re one of the few exceptions that I see here.

I don’t know much about your story, but please allow me to share my experiences with you. I just wanted to go to a college that ‘fits’ me. Not just prestige. The whole ‘feel’.

My school is not-so-famous, it’s located in Northern Queensland, Australia. High school schoolmates either call me cool, or bonkers. Why didn’t I go to Queensland or other comparable universities? But I am very sure the education I get in my current college, James Cook University, is a good choice, particularly in Marine Biology. The relaxed vibe there is really cool. If you can find a similar experience while pursuing your own interests in your next college, I’ll be happy for you.

As for a lucky poster who really live in-state and has insights for both schools, I really feel fortunate to meet you here. But I think I will be in NC only after graduation.

You’re in at UNCW I believe.
I live in North Carolina and a handful of students from my school go there every year, the majority of them with grades nowhere near as good as yours.
However, even with a public school, admission is a crap shoot. I completely agree with ncmentor; Contact the admissions office and let them get to know you. The majority of schools that I have toured so far have all told me the same thing, and I’m positive its no difference with Wilmington.

So I have booked a visiting day and am going down to Wilmington soon to visit! I’m rather excited to be honest… I’m hoping that the school is as nice in person as it is on paper…

Can anyone else chance me??

undertheskyline - have a great time and please check back and let us know what you think.

Hope you’ll have fun in college.

you are easily in at old Dominion, and UNC Wilmington is definitely a solid target school, chances for both schools rare really good

I don’t see you having any issues at these schools. All looks good to me, plenty of classes taken and really good AP grades. Keep up the good work!
