So I am a high school junior and have just gotten my scores for the SAT back and want to know my chances for the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. I know I still have a little to think about it before my senior year, but it’s fast approaching.
My information:
I got a 1390 on the new SAT (680 Reading and Writing, 710 Math) and have another SAT I took with results I am still waiting for; I was striving for a 1400 and I don’t think I’ll ever get above a 1430
I have a 4.0 gpa (which is the highest our school has)
I’ve taken/am about to take (senior year) AP classes such as AP World, AP Lit. and Lang., AP Psych, AP Calc and AP Bio.
My other activities include theater tech, marching band, robotics, NHS, French club, key club, and a couple others of that nature but I do not do any sports; I do hold leadership roles in some of these clubs
I’m also Asian (Chinese specifically) but I do not know if that benefits me or not as I’ve heard it can go both ways
I don’t know what exactly I want to go into but I’m not interested the engineering school (I’ve heard that’s hard to get into). Probably something biology-related
What are my chances and do you think UoM is a good fit? Thanks!
You have pretty good stats. Do you live in Michigan? Michigan is quite a bit harder for OOS students. The fact that you’re not looking to do engineering at Michigan improves your chances. Seems like you have reasonable course rigor - are most/all of your non-AP classes at least at the honors level?
Your ECs aren’t that strong from what you’ve said. Being chinese does not help (most likely).
I’d say Accept/WL and it depends on whether you’re from Michigan or not
Try to improve your SAT unless you have a better ACT score. The admission stat from last year with the new SAT score is unexpectedly high. The mid 50 was 1440-1570 (2050-2330 in old SAT). Even for in state students, having a test score below the 25th percentile would be a risk factor. The in state admission rate has gone below 50% in the last couple years. Nevertheless, UMich views GPA and course rigor to be more important than test score. Just note that ~20% of more enrolled freshmen has 4.0 uwGPA (no subgrade) in high school.
@admiral12 what makes this person’s ECs not very strong? It looks like quite a few activities to me. What kind of ECs are better for U of M hopefuls? I have a daughter that is interested in going there. If this person’s ECs aren’t strong then my kid is in trouble (only marching band, varsity dance team, NHS, ecology club, her school has like zero clubs).
@3js3ks It was just that they didn’t really talk about them- like, if they’re just a member of xyz club and isn’t super involved (i.e shows up to meetings vs competing in a FIRST robotics competition). My view is rather distorted and cynical however, coming from a really competitive high school the kids tend to get hosed on college acceptances. I wouldn’t worry. Also, looking back at it I think they’ve got good enough ECs lol I guess I wasn’t really thinking straight.
OP’s EC is fine for UMich. It is actually far better than my D (also Asian) who is now a junior at UMich CoE. My D has no sport and only joined one or two clubs at HS without leadership role. She did have orchestra for 4 years though. OP has leadership roles in clubs. I don’t think OP should spend more time in building up EC instead of improving test scores.
