Chance for UP? Schreyer?

Hi guys - first off, sorry for making one of these threads. I figure that I'm pretty much a lock for main campus (correct me if I'm wrong) with maybe a little bit of potential to receive merit aid, but not really competitive at all for Schreyer.

Unweighted GPA - Around 3.6
Weighted GPA - Around 4.3
Current weighted GPA (Q1) - 5.075
AP Classes - 8
Class Rank - Around 25%
1st SAT - 670 CR / 650 M / 610 W [1930 combined]
2nd SAT - 670 CR / 580 M / 680 W [1930 combined, 2000 superscore]
Extracurriculars - Football (4 years), Lacrosse (2 years), Track (2 years), Big-brother program (1 year), Community service program (1 year), Powerlifting club (1 year, new this year), currently work 20-25 hours a week at a restaurant

I think you’re definitely going to get in to both, your resume is above average (especially for Schreyer.) Dont even worry! Just get your app in before the Nov 30 deadline and you’re in.

Schreyer acceptance is not about your gpa and test scores (I don’t think test scores are even seen at Schreyer). Honors scholars have a demonstrated passion for the wider world, a solid commitment to their work and ECs; ambitious – very ambitious — goals for their future and a desire to make an impact as adults. Those things need to be reflected in authentic, original, flawless and thoughtful essays. The essays should take you substantial thought and effort. Best of luck! Admittance is very competitive. Very.

The single-most important component of the SHC application is high school performance, accounting for the rigor of classwork and reputation of the high school. I’m not sure why I read statements to the contrary from time to time on this forum. This is misinformation. This is repeated at every SHC visit. Faculty readers consider performance and rigor in their overall evaluations.
Test scores, no. I think the HC would rise a few places in rankings if they used test scores in the evaluations. However, the process they use seems to work for them and I don’t think this will change anytime soon.
3.6UW is not out of the question, but is lower than most successful applicants. It all depends on the details of the 3.6 and the school. A 3.6 at a rigorous private school is very different from a 3.6 from an above average public. Likewise, a consistent 3.6 is different from a situation where the GPA is reduced because a couple of lower grades in subjects outside of the students strengths. You’ll only know if you apply.

Ours neighbors two kids are in Schreyers. These two kids are very heavy involved in their community. There were top student when they were in HS. They were in the very top 2-5% of their class. Not really sure what it takes to get into SHC.

However, your stats are great. My son had a slightly higher UW GPA and a slightly higher SAT score. If you are looking for merit aid just know it may not happen. My son and several of his friends didn’t get merit, as well. Also, two his friend had the same GPA and SAT scores as he did. Exactly the same application stats. They were originally bumped to a branch campus. They ended up taking summer session to make it in for Fall at UP. You just never know how PSU makes these decisions. Our school and our neighborhood has a high amount of students at PSU campuses. Currently the 7 students in neighborhood are at UP (1 started summer, 1 transfer from branch after 1st yr. the rest UP admits). Tons alumni students here as well.

Good Luck to you. You do have great application.

PS. my comments above pertain to SHC competitiveness, not admittance into PSU UP. Stats are very competitive for non-honors admittance.

Here’s one example of a SHC student–

^although she is a good example of a SHC student, we know of a few students that were admitted that did not do anything on that level. The essays are a very important. Students mentioned in PERplexD post were most likely bumped to summer/branch because or rolling admission. Mute point now, but the earlier you get your application in, the more forgiving with stats.

I appreciate all of the replies. I filled out my application yesterday down to the optional personal statement and activity summary. Would you guys recommend filling these out?

On another note, I got my ACT scores back a few days ago. My score was a 31. Not overjoyed but definitely content with my score. I went ahead and sent it to all of the colleges that I am looking at.
