I have been captain and vice president of debate which I've been a part of for four years, I was a state qualifier for Congressional Debate for two years, finalist for one of them, National alternate in Congress and International Extemporaneous. In DECA, I went to State and placed 2nd in Restaurant and Food Service Management and went to Internationals, I went to state in Mock Trial, I am in Student Council as a representative. I have done Model UN for two years including this year, I have volunteer hours, and I have a published essay on the topic of racism and inclusion in the International Journal of Critical Pedagogy. What are my chances for USC, UCSB, UCLA, Deep Springs, and Loyola Chicago? Keep in mind that USC is not like the UC's as it is a private school, not a public school if that changes my chances at all. Thanks for the chancing and I'll chance you back!

Do you have financial match and safety schools on your list, if needed? USC and UCLA are definite reaches.

I do have safeties: Purdue University, Valparaiso University (already accepted), and Indiana University Bloomington.

Bumpety Bump.

UCSB - Maybe.
USC - Hard.
UCLA - Hard.
You should definitely apply to lower ranked UC’s like UCI, UCSC, UCR. To be in a safe range, I think you should be at least around the 50th percentile on everything (GPA and SAT) provided by collegeboard website (UC schools look mostly at your GPA and SAT score).
It is not a good idea to judge undergrad level studies at UC Schools based on their rank. UC schools and USC are grad-level study institutions, and they are ranked based on their grad schools. you should look up what majors are good at each schools you wish to go. (ex. I heard ucsc has a really good naval architecture program)

UCLA, big time reach.

UCSB is less of a reach, but still a tad. But, I think you have a shot at SB, unlike UCLA. Your extras and sat’s are solid.

USC is a reach, but you have some interesting extras that a private school like 'SC might find intriguing. W/ a strong essay, I think you’d be a good fit for them.

Deep Springs, hmmm. You know better than I do. I imagine they’re as selective as it gets, right? I mean, a free (amazing) education, in a beautiful location. That tells me something!

I wish you luck! You seem pretty damn interesting, and I hope the school you have your heart set on sees that in you.

USC: reach
UCLA: reach
UCSB: high match

word2mother, thanks a bunch! I’m hoping my essays and recs can help me out a lot.

One more bump to get some fresh eyes and ideas on this matter.

Echoing the sentiments of the previous posters:

UCLA and UC Berkeley are going to be reaches for you because of your GPA and test scores. I’d wager that USC is a reach too unless you come from a feeder school or have relatives working there. UCSB, depending on where you are, is probably a match. Like someone else already recommended, I’d suggest applying to some of the lower-tier UCs like UCSC, UCI, UCR, etc if you really want to go to school in California. Your stats would be about on par there.

Good luck applying!

Bumping for one more time.

Most of these are reaches because of your GPA, Loyola Chicago might be a match, don’t know what Deep Springs is.

Do you think they’ll skip over my application because my GPA will suck?

UCSB- low reach/match
USC- write good essays, they may like you
UCLA- high reach
not sure about Loyloa Chicago/Deep Springs…but good luck :)

Deep Spring- high reach
UCLA- reach
USC- reach
UCSB- match/ high match
Loyala Chicago- low match

Chance me back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1569950-chance-me-please.html

What should I focus on for the USC essays?

Budabump I’m working on the essays right now. How can I increase my chances with them?

Bumpin’ like a daddy.
