Chance for UT Engineering?

I'm afraid UT's top 10% rule and emphasis on class rank / gpa will get me. I hope I can get in the school of engineering and maybe honors. What do y'all think?

SAT: Math - 760, Critical Reading - 720, Writing - 730 (from one test)
SAT IIs: Math II - 800, Chem - 740
APs: Calc BC - 5, Chem - 4, Physics B - 4, English Language - 4, European History - 4
I'm also taking AP Gov, Marco Econ, English, Physics C, and Computer Science this year.
Weighted GPA - 4.27 (thats my weak spot...)
Rank: 32/174 (a very competitive school)

Awards/EC
AP Scholar with Distinction
National Merit Commended
NHS
Tons of volunteer work - includes volunteering at hospitals, food banks, mission trips to Mexico to build houses and set up carnivals.
Drumline/Band for 4 years
Outstanding soloist at state UIL percussion contest
Youth and Government, won best witness a few years ago and best attorney this year
German Club
Studied Classical Piano for 12 years
Am a private math tutor

The only thing holding you back is your rank, but your SATs and ECs easily make up for it. Your weighted GPA isn’t low, don’t worry. You may have to work a bit harder on essays than a top 10% would, but I’d say you have a really good chance of getting in.

are you instate or oos? That’s a bummer about your rank, but with those test scores, who knows…

Good luck!

I’m instate. Does that make it harder or easier?

Last year, it seemed that oos kids with lower ranks were getting in over similar kids in state. My opinion was that UT was doing that to shock the leg into enacting change to the 10% rule, which they did. This is the last year the 10% rule will be in effect for UT, so in your case, your rank really hurts you. If you were graduating in 2011, your test scores would really put you in a great position to gain entrance in the 25% that will be admitted holistically.

I truly do wish you the best of luck! You are a great student who should be admitted to UT, but it really is just going to depend on the number of kids from Texas who apply and are top 10%.

Last year, UT implemented a waiting list, perhaps they will again this year. I cannot imagine that a student with your scores would not be admitted, or at least offered a spot on the wait list.

As for engineering, that’s going to be tough. It is a restricted major, and kids with similar test scores, but higher ranks are quickly taking up what spots they have. My son is waiting on honors also, and he is 7% (3.98 unweighted, 4.48 weighted), with a 33 ACT (36 math), and we aren’t expecting him to get into the honors program. It is REALLY tough to get in!

Yeah, hopefully I will be admitted into UT. I wouldn’t mind studying mathematics there either, so if I don’t make engineering hopefully I can make it into natural science. Thank you so much for your input and thoughts, they are much appreciated!
