I am applying to Virginia Tech regular decision this January for engineering. I feel pretty confident, but I am a little concerned about my SAT scores. An admissions advisor came to my school in New Jersey and explained how majors such as engineering or architecture are more competitive to get into.
SAT Math: 650
CR: 700
Writing: 770
I feel that my 650 in math is a little low for the engineering program, and that the higher CR and writing scores will weigh less. I am taking them again in October to try to improve the math score. I have taken the highest level math classes my high school offers (Algebra II honors, Geometry honors, Pre-calculus honors, currently in AP Calc AB) and have maintained mostly A's. I have also taken biology and chemistry and am currently taking physics. So, if my math score does not increase this October, how are my chances for getting into VA Tech's engineering program?

My GPA is a 94.6 (we use a 100 scale at our school) weighted. I am in the top 10% out of about 190 students in my class.

It could be a little iffy since you
re an out of stater, have lower SAT scores, and don
t have THAT high of a GPA…I live in VA and one of my teachers recently mentioned that a girl she taught applied to VT and didn`t get in…and she had a 4.0 GPA (100 on your scale) and took honors, AP, etc, etc. Get the SAT scores up for sure.

I think our system is a little different, it isn’t a clear-cut proportion. My high school counselor explained that a 4.0 translates to about a 95 on our scale, with a 100 GPA being the maximum of 4.25 (the 1 ranked student has a 97 average). But thanks for the info, i’ll definitely work on getting that math score up.

VA tech is a particularly tough school for out-of-stater’s. The 650 in math is a bit low for the engineering program, especially since the other applicants will most ike have 700 if not 750+. I am not so sure of you extracurriculars, but based off of the objective academics, I would say no more than a 50-60% chance RD. Good luck! Chance me back?

gjeff11, I think your chances of getting into VT Engineering are excellent. I applied ED Engineering and got in. I am out-of-state and only had a 610 Math SAT. I had 3.9 regular GPA. I just sent in my mid term grades and my GPA is now 4.0. I’ve read on here that most people don’t think the essay and extra curr activities have anything to do with it, but I think they do. I was heaving weighted in extra curr act. Good luck to you.
