Teacher Recs: I have no idea, I am "writing" one of them, and the other one..well the teacher loves me. Submitting an additional rec from my EC's advisor.

Essay: Basically explaining why I got involved in my ECs..somewhat autobiographical. (I was struggling with English the first couple years in Canada..which contributed to my sub-par grade 9 & 10 mark..and my lack of ECs in those years. Do you think I should mention this in my essay?)

Thanks for reading!

Also looking for schools with good rep in the business world that would be safeR with my stats.

Chances? Comments? Suggestions?

wow I must really be hopeless to have no one comment on my thread…

bleh i rote somein and i wasn’t logged in so it got lost =/
sec lemme rewrite

you definitely have a shot :o

just a coupla suggestions/queries

erm firstly, why are you writing your first teacher recommendation? is it because your teacher told you to and is gonna sign off in the end? or is it because you have no teacher willing to write a recco for you? because in the former case its okay i guess if a college calls but in the latter you could end up getting screwed for it =/

in terms of ur extra-curriculars they’re really good as far as demonstrating your interest in business goes, seeing as ur prezzy of ur school’s business club and the student company :o, + the PR thing :)

ur AP thing may hurt you though, unis will take in2 account that those are the most offered by your school if your school says so, but they may wonder why you didn’t e.g. self study a couple or something =/

as fer your essays DON’T ever write anything negative… so don’t go about ur lack of EC’s there, + is this essay on ur EC’s ur commonapp essay? because if it is then im assuming your using ur business related EC’s? that’d be a good thing for business orientated schools but if you want a backup in a general college then i’d suggest writing another commonapp essay :O

ur sat 1 holds you in fairly good stead, what was your breakup though? if it was close to 800M then that’s good for business schools, but if it’s lower then id recommend retaking if you have some time spare cause ivies are just lookin for ways to reject you =/

just remember admissions is a crapshoot, especially more so with ivies, so don’t become at ease/complacent from what another 18 year old in the same position as you posts here…otherwise you could be in for a lot of dissapointment later =/

with stats like urs look at the Ross School of Business (UMICH) and NYU’s Stern as low matches? theyre both well reputed =)

good luck tho =)

wow bballer thanks for the comment!
The teacher I’m asking wants to write it for me but feels that he can’t comment anything about my ECs. So he basically asked me write a “draft” of the rec and he’ll use that to write…don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing…

My essay was about a “failure” and what I learnt from it. It feels somewhat autobiographical…since I began by talking about my childhood. o.o

my break down is CR 780 M 740 WR 650 :(…definitely retaking in Jan.

Again thanks for the great comments!

BTW Ross and Stern are great schools but I’m an int’l needing full financial aid and I don’t know what that’s gonna work out… (either outright rejected or not enough aid…)

Anyone else has an opinion?

As you can see with the Wharton ED’s, anything can be possible. I didn’t think that I had a shot. Now I’ll be attending Penn in the fall. Good luck!

lol np =)

just make sure ur essay isn’t too negative though, and moer concentrated on what you learnt from the experience

nd dw bout ur SAT’s… they’re fine, u have a 1520/1600 which is what most colleges will look at, not so much the writing score :)

also, i think umich has good FA, dunno bout Stern…but u better hurry for umich if ur applying because they’re rolling admissions and would have admitted a good portion of their class by now =/

^Thanks guys!
Sorry I did a typo on the SAT scores, I got a 730 for Math instead of 740…but Wharton looks at all 3 sections equally, don’t they?
Also, does UMich have a deadline even though it’s rolling admissions? Do they give financial aid that meets 100% need of an int’l?

I come from a pretty similar background as you. Canadian citizen, Chinese background, currently living in US (have been since 7th grade).

Not going to lie, your stats (SAT scores) are on the lower side for international applicants. Try to get an 800 for M if you’re thinking about business schools.

As to financial aid, I don’t think UMich (public) or Stern give out any financial aid for international applicants…I did research this year when I applied.

Message me if you have any questions. Good luck!

Oh, I forgot to mention. I was accepted ED to the Jerome Fisher Program in M&T this year (Wharton & Engineering).

you should repost this in the what are my chances forum, but I’d say you have a good shot

I would agree, you definitely show lots of leadership.

Remember that UPenn and Wharton LOVE entrepreneurism
so you should consider writing an essay about your future ambitions
make something up about your vision of the future and your role in it

you want to show them that you can be a leader/entrepreneur

Thanks for the replies guys~ and Xc66266 CONGRATS!

@astonmartin, I did post this in that forum, got a whole lot of negative replies because of my SATs lol.

@PEM, hehe, maybe I can talk about my (failed) entrepreneurship activity over the summer XD.
