Chance/ help out a sub-3.0 Buddy!

Yeah, you read it right… sub 3.0.

There are 5 schools that are really high on my list, and I’m not really sure if I’m qualified, or can get myself to be qualified by the time this year is over. (I’m a junior.)

Can someone tell me which of these schools are “no ways” and can be taken off my list, and which ones I still may have a fighting chance at if I improve?

These are the schools, in order of preference:

  1. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  2. University of Washington-Seattle
  3. Indiana University-Bloomington
  4. University of Wisconsin-Madison
  5. Purdue University
(I guess I’d be perfectly happy attending any of these)

Here’s my situation:

White Guy, from Minnesota

ALL Honors and AP that areavailable, I’m taking. I probably have the hardest schedule in all of my class.

ACT: Expecting around a 27-30, hopefully towards the higher end of that range.

EXCELLENT EC’s (leadership, PT job, athletics, theater, tutoring, community volunteering, etc.)

HERE’S THE PROBLEM:

GPA: 2.99 RANK: 55th %ile (ouch)
^^^ My school runs on a trimester system. I started 9th grade off well (This was still “junior high” for us), but during the third trimester, I got some D’s and an F. (The F was replaced with an A when I retook the class.) Sophomore year was excellent. I started taking honors classes, and got my GPA up from a 2.7 to a 3.1. Junior Year came along, and I was stupid and decided to go all out on AP’s. 1st trimester I got 2 A’s, 2 B’s, and 2 D’s. Yes, I said D’s. (Honors Alg. 3 & Anatomy were the D’s.) I learned to stay OUT of honors math for life. Too bad I’m stuck in it for the year…
So far in the second trimester, I’m doing quite well. (A,A,A,A,B,B-)
I’ve just had a few tough times that I’ve failed to fight through. I was a lazy idiot, and I easilly admit it.

But yeah, so which of the schools on my list have I not completely locked myself out of?

c’mon…

You know, it’s always very interesting to me how a student with a 3.0 has been guided to take all AP’s and honors…around these parts, you can’t even be accepted into an honors class with less than an A- in the previous class, nevermind AP. That being said, the schools on your list are stats driven, not curriculum driven…if your curriculum is as rigorous as it appears, you would be much better off in a smaller private or even a smaller public that acknowledges rigor…large state U’s could really care less; they will see the GPA and that will be all they care about…ACT is fine, but GPA will hurt, even with the rigor.

i’d say the only schools you have any chance at are indiana (amazing school) and purdue (completely awful, only bad people go to that school), and even with those two, it’s a maybe.

Okay, so apparently I should pretty much just forget about all of those places.

I’m starting over and making a whole new list. Which sucks.

Can someone give me some specific matches and safeties, please? I’m drawn to large state schools mostly.

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign- Reach

University of Washington-Seattle- Reach

Indiana University-Bloomington- In

University of Wisconsin-Madison- reach

Purdue University- 50/50

What about Michigan State?

If you’re still a junior and you do really well for the rest of this year and first trimester of senior year and do well on your ACT, it’d increase your chances a lot. Illinois, Wisconsin, and Washington would still be reaches, but you’d have a much better shot. Also, Michigan State is probably in there with Indiana and Purdue.
