What do you think are my chances of receiving Tulane's DHS or 30k scholarship? I'm writing the optional essay and visiting, and I've contacted admissions so I think my demonstrated interest is covered.

@StagNation (nice name) - While no one can give you anything quantitative, your chances would seem to be as good as anyone’s. My D received the DHS 5 years ago and her stats were almost spot on identical to yours. Even down to French being her language in high school, although she went the traditional route on that. There was no Paul Tulane Award back then, and you should be sure to go for that as well. I would be surprised if you didn’t get the Presidential Merit Scholarship, which I think has been increased to $32K this year. But there are too many variables to say any more than that regarding the DHS, such as how many applicants there are in any given year, how strong that pool of applicants is, and of course the quality of your project (DHS) and essays (PTA).

BTW, the NM isn’t so trivial. You will no doubt be a finalist, and that is worth another $2,000 per year. That’s even if you win a full tuition award.

@fallenchemist, thanks for the advice. You know quite a lot about Tulane … can you tell me anything about entrepreneurship there? It seems like they have a robust enough program / culture for it.

Yes, Tulane has had quite an emphasis on it since Katrina. I can’t remember the details now, but Entrepreneur Magazine gave Tulane’s B School quite a great review in this. And New Orleans itself is one of the 2 or 3 top spots for start ups at the moment. Add to that the fact that Tulane (and to some degree NOLA) are quite strong in the energy sector, which promises to be quite entrepreneurial for years to come. Another strong area for Tulane is biomedical engineering, which is also rich with new ideas with no end in sight. That’s not even the whole picture, but it gives you the flavor of it all.
