Chance-HPY Duke Vandy Tufts Emory

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Duke, Vanderbilt, Tufts, Emory

I’d appreciate all chance opinions for S at his reach schools. Trying to choose an ED option. Although published stats hint that he has some hope, info I see on the CC forum indicates he has no chance. I really value the feedback from folks on the forum. Thanks!

RANK 4/310
GPA 4.0 UW, 5.05 W
SAT 2020 (740M, 620CR, 660W) Superscore
ACT 31
Senior, North Carolina Pub HS
Will have 7 AP classes at graduation.
4 complete (Calc I&II, Chem II,US Hist) 3 more this year (Stats,Bio, Gov)

EC’s:
Beta Club (service)-President
Student Athlete Honor Society (service)– President
NHS- member
Varsity Soccer-4 years
Varsity Tennis-2 years
Plays on a club/travel soccer team that competes nationally on the highest level for age group, nationally ranked team. NOT recruited at any of the reach schools mentioned.

White, male. No hooks.

Ditch SAT, send in ACT

Your son stats are a replica of mine except he has 20 pts higher in CR (same act). I would say definitely make sure he has matches/safeties, but I’m sure he has a good chance at getting into 1 or 2 of those schools, at least

My sister goes to duke and she loves it. I’m sure it’s a great ED option

HYP- reach
Duke - low reach
Vandy/Tufts/Emory - match

I would say to forget about Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, and probably Duke as well.

Everyone applying to those schools have super human credentials.

I would take the ACT again.

My son raised his score from a 31 to a 34, with zero studying.

Mere familiarity with the exam will help.

Even raising it from a 31 to a 32 would help.

Sorry to be honest, but I just can’t see how a white male with a 31 and weak EC’s besides soccer has any chance at HYP and Duke. The last 3 are even a pretty significant stretch based on what you have given (no recommendations or essays obviously).

I would retake the SAT and try ED to Tufts, Vandy or Emory. You might have a chance there, though even then with those scores it’s a longshot.

My sincere thanks to all who replied. I post on this board for real, unfiltered (no sugar coating required) feedback. I am grateful for everyone’s input.
What I take away:
*Save the stamps and forget about H/Y/P & Duke.
*S will retake SAT & ACT in Oct. He’s confident he can get over 2100 on SAT. Will also take SAT subject Math in Nov. (forgot to mention he got 750 US Hist subj. test)
Also forgot to mention that I expect his essays to be very good, but not over the top stellar. I do expect teacher/principal recs to be stellar, but whose aren’t?
*Further research best option for ED at Tufts, Vandy, Emory. Tufts is his first choice, just don’t know how realistic right now.
Thanks again to all!

I think HYP are probably gonna be out of reach, but Duke less so. ED there would not be a bad idea if he really wants to go there.

Sblazer,
Does that mean that you think he has a shot at Vandy, Tufts, or Emory RD? In your opinion will he need to use ED at one of those?
I think he’d take Duke over the other three, but doesn’t want to waste his ED on Duke if it’s unrealistic. Especially if he needs ED for one of the other three. Thanks.

If he raises his ACT/SAT a little bit and takes his SAT IIs, he should be fine for Vandy, Tufts, or Emory. He could probably get into at least one of them RD if not more so Duke ED could be a consideration. If he can’t raise his scores, it might be safer to go with an ED at a Vandy, Tufts, or Emory.

Sorry but not looking good for HPY and Duke

mmm HYP and Duke are major reaches. You have decent chances for Vandy, Tufts, and Emory. Chance me back?

Based on your son’s stats and likes:

EDI at Duke

EDII at Tufts

And whatever else he likes RD.

Latest plan: Duke EDI, Vandy EDII, RD Emory&Tufts and maybe two Ivies just to say he tried. RD Safties UNC-Chapel Hill/Furman/Richmond,
Any thoughts or comments? Thanks.

How did the application go? Did he try and make himself unique? And are those all of his ECs?

Just wanted to follow up for any future readers and also take the opportunity to thank all who responded one more time.

S raised his ACT to 33 and decided to use his ED1 for Duke. He was accepted and will attend in the Fall.

I think that you have a good chance at Emory, Duke, and Tufts. HPY are difficult for everyone  but your very high rank is definitely a plus. Good luck!!
