and also.. how competitive is archi major?

For the College of Fine Arts:
590-680 CR 610-710M 610-690 W 16% Rank 3.51 GPA
from Admission Statistics

Statistically you're in range - writing a bit low, but should be improvable. However, for CFA your portfolio is going to be critical AP art will be a big help there. Have you taken any architecture/drafting courses at your high school?

Acceptance rates vary a lot by school from 14% for Tepper to 35% for MCS and HSS. The College of Fine Arts rate is 22%. Don't know to what extent architecture vs other arts makes a difference within CFA.

is it okay if I take drafting class at the community college?
cuz our school don' offer one..
and im planning to take a summer class at Sci-Arc,
(southern california institute of Architecture..)
i don know if it will help.. =_=..
though..
and thank you for the reply.. :)

I believe the stats for successful architecture applicants should be somewhat higher than those for CFA applicants in general. Moreover, as part of your application, you will probably have to submit a portfolio of creative work for review, even if that is optional. I suggest you post to the "architecture major" board for additional information.

BTW, let me just add that CMU has one of the top architecture programs in the country and admissions are very competitive. You can also visit the School of Architecture's admissions page for details.

Sci-arc would be a great experience for you. You'd almost certainly have some good things for a portfolio and also have a better idea if architecture is for you. If you have time drafting would be nice, but it's probably less critical.

For what it's worth you should also figure out if you want an undergrad professional degree in architecture or if you want to get a liberal arts degree with a major in architecture that will require going on to grad school. (I did the latter.) Not all schools offer undergrad architecture majors. Yale is the one I know best and you can cobble something close to one together at Harvard via the VES department. (Or do as a recent intern of mine did and make up your own major.)

Thanks for the replies.. :)
btw.. do you really think Sci-Arc summer program is good?
cuz I don' wanna waste my $2,000....T^T

Any summer program in architecture or design would be a positive. As mathmom said, in CFA, the portfolio is the most important part of your application. Drafting and model building are essential skills you will need to communicate your design ideas. Any chance at interning for a small architectural firm would be a good experience as well. Be sure this career is your passion, it is one of the toughest majors at CMU.

I don't know the Sci-Arc program, it's been 20 years since I lived in Southern CA, but back then it was a really interesting place. Harvard also has a well respected summer architecture program. If you can get one an internship would probably be just as valuable, and cost-free - however unless you know CAD you would probably be of limited use.

Kittymom is right, I've never ever worked so hard as I did in architecture school. Many, many all-nighters.

So, hypothetically, does that mean if I applied with 570CR/600M/690W , that I'd be sort of within range. I'm like 10 points underneath w/math, 20 with reading, but like 80 over with writing so i'm like 60 ahead of it? lol.

oh.. thank you.. for the replies.. :)
I guess.. but I'm not sure.. i think GPA is more important for
CMU.. to me, it's SOL.... T^T

Have you considered the summer high school architecture program at CMU? I'm not sure how much it costs, but if you are set on this school, it may be your best option. Check the architecture page on the website.

well.. what i tried to do was be instate.. cuz if I get outta state,
it will cost more.. and taking classes at CMU doesn mean it's guaranteed...
so, yea.. oh, can you get financial aid for the summer program?

Most summer programs do offer financial aid. It never hurts to ask.

:) yea.. i should i ask.. thank you..
oh, btw.. what kind of portfolio do the want?
cuz, my cousin applied to RISD and Cooper last year, and she had the
weirdest things to do..
like do they look for the basic? or the creativeness...?
what if you are not a great artist.. T^T...?
My art teacher told me, I have no basic but creativeness.....=_+
