i applied ED but got deferred ...do i have a chance of getting in RD?

We certainly understand your disappointment in being deferred as W&M was your top choice and we certainly appreciate that those who are not admitted ED may face more disappointment than those who apply regular decision. Any new information (academic or personal) that has come about since your initial application was submitted in November should be forwarded to W&M ASAP.

While we will review your application again in its entirety during regular decision, the pool of competitive applicants grows exponentially during regular decision. The number of students who are in the top 10% of their class, who take calculus, physics, and the fourth level of a single foreign language, and the number of students with testing in and above the middle 50% range (28-32 for the ACT) are a multitude of times higher than they are during early decision because of the applicant pool size (~1100 compared to over 12,000). It is because of this that we encourage all deferred students to begin looking seriously at other colleges in their initial decision letter. While some ED defers are admitted, it’s generally less than 10%.

We wish you all the best in our application process as well as the other schools to which you are applying. Remember, if you end up at somewhere other than W&M, your experience won’t be worse, simply different. With over 4000 colleges and universities out there, we understand you may have a top choice but there are multiple good fits out there for every student.
