Chance into IU Bloomington

Hey guys, I have a friend that wants to get into Bloomington. Im reposting it here because it seems more appropriate. Here are her stats.

870 SAT not including writing (if that matters)
Shes instate
Has alumni
Top half of her class
She has above a 3.0 GPA

I know the sats arent so hot but what about everything else?

How good do you think her chances are?

She applied pretty early as well.

PS

She is taking Precalc, Astronomy, American Sign Language, Economics, and the last english class in highschool.

She has some volunteer work as well.

Her alumni is her dad and her sister.

But yeah my sats werent great, like 410 and 560 and i got in. I looked on the sat website and 23 percent of students got sats in the 400 range for reading and 17 percent got 400 range in math. I guess thats a pretty large chunk out of 29000 some students. Do you think she has atleast a moderate chance? I figure with her decent gpa, alumni and upper class that might out weigh the low sat scores.

She has a chance, but it's not likely. The applicant pool for IUB is getting significantly tougher year after year, and this year you have to have a GPA over 3.2 or so with at least a 1050 out of 1600 SAT. Generally, IUB doesn't count "legacies"--what you refer to as "alumni".

If she applies for a non-competitive major she might have a chance--something that very few people apply to. Most of the students who choose Indiana University do so to attend their top-ranked business, music, journalism or sports marketing programs.

Something like Liberal Arts/General Studies, Parks and Recreation, Philosophy, Psychology, Religious Studies or Social Sciences would increase her chances.

thanks for the information. She did apply to IUE and got accepted. I know they have lower standards but does it hold any weight with IUB that she was accepted to an IU school? Also, I know it sounds stupid but when you say it doesnt look good, you mean like a 6/10 not good or a 2/10? Shes really obssessing over it and im just trying to help her get some more information.

thanks again

Presuming that a 51% means one is likely to be accepted, and 49% means one is likely to be rejected, I put her chances at around 35%. (Better than most applicants' chances at being accepted at schools like Georgetown or USC, but worse (for her at IUB) than the chance of a random student getting into the University of Oregon or University of Missouri).

Also, if she is accepted already at IUE, she can transfer to IUB or Purdue in a year or two easily anyway.

P.S. As far as you getting in with a 410/560, congratulations--but if only 23% get in with 400s in reading and 17% with scores in the 400s for math, then the odds of getting 400s in both and getting in is therefore less than 1 out of 25. Granted out of 9,000 acceptees, that means maybe 215 or so will get in--but like I said the odds are not good. After all, these 215 are likely to be students with higher GPAs that just test poorly. As an example, I'll bet that your GPA is higher than a 3.2 overall (weighted).

hmm interesting...

We worked out her GPA and its like 3.44-3.5

Would that help boost the 35%? I know thats an estimate but still, would it?

Also how much impact does being instate have?
