Chance me? 2.9 gpa with 2000 SAT

Hello everyone! I'm currently a junior in high school residing in Southern California. I have a very low GPA because I was originally planning on enlisting to the military to go to BUD/s (training to become a SEAL) right after high school but I thought it'd be a safe route to go through college first to mature more. I have not taken any AP's due to my school being very strict. You need to get a 94% or higher in the college preparation class AND you have to get it signed by the teacher. I also can't raise my gpa any further. My high school is VERY competitive, dozens going to UC berkeley, UCLA, etc so would colleges know my colleges are competitive?

Planning on these schools, are these way out of my league?
University of Iowa
PSU
University of Colorado-Boulder
UCSC
University of Arizona
ASU
Syracuse University
University of Connecticut
Ohio State University
SDSU
FSU
MSU

I’m afraid UCSC is out, unless your UC GPA is higher than 3.0. They don’t accept anything lower than a 3.0 from instate students.

I can’t speak with certainity about the other schools on this list (although I’d say to probably rule out PSU, OSU, Syracuse, and maybe SDSU), but ASU is practically a sure thing with the 2000 (assuming 1100 M+CR, which you have). UoA will be a tad harder, but you’ll probably also get into that.

Are you sure you can’t raise your GPA any further, up to 3.0? ASU will give you 6K for that, yearly.

Out of curiosity, is MSU Mississippi, Missouri, or Montana?

Buggie111, is Syracuse and SDSU 100% not able to get in? What happens if I write a killer essay and get great recommendations would it be possible? I’m not really interested in those colleges due to the fact that it’s very rural. I want to live in a city college. What about University of Florida?

Not 100%, no, but way more likely no than yes. Cappex doesn’t mean jacksquat, but this graph shows very few sub 3.0 acceptances at Syracuse (<a href=“Syracuse University: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA”>http://collegeapps.about.com/od/GPA-SAT-ACT-Graphs/ss/syracuse-university-admission-gpa-sat-act.htm</a>) and only a slightly larger amount at SDSU (<a href=“SDSU: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores, GPA”>http://collegeapps.about.com/od/GPA-SAT-ACT-Graphs/ss/sdsu-san-diego-state-admission-gpa-sat-act.htm</a>).

For Florida, it’s also a big no. Their average GPA range is 4.1-4.4, and from this url (<a href=“Freshman - How To Apply - University of Florida”>http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/frprofile.html</a>), only 1.3% of those with a sub 3.3 got in. I’d throw that one out.

Well, this is unfortunate lol. I would also like to hear other opinions of this situation. Anyone?

For SDSU, essays and teacher recommendations are not part of the application. It is all STAT’s based using an eligibility index (CSU/UC GPA x800) + (SAT Math + SAT CR) score. An EI of 4100+ would be good. SDSU unfortunately is probably a reach. Average GPA was 3.8 this year.

MSU is Missouri State University.

Coming from someone in Missouri, you can consider MSU a safety. <a href=“Admission Requirements and Deadlines - Freshman Admission - Missouri State”>Admission Requirements and Deadlines - Freshman Admission - Missouri State; says you will automatically be admitted.

Your SAT will help to balance out your GPA. Especially since you are out of state, I would not expect much aid though. How’d it end up on your list?

I’m surprised you let your grades slip if you were looking into SEAL training. They like high gpa’s also.
For SDSU, that GPA is not going to get you in.

aunt bea, I let my grades slip because I became so committed with training that I would spend more time in the gym (running, swimming, etc) than in school. I finally figured out that going to college and getting a degree in something I’m passionate about would benefit me in the long run before I go to BUD/s. Unfortunately, I wish I figured this out earlier, such as freshman/sophomore year, where I could have improved my GPA significantly but of course it’s too late now.

Would anyone give me some chances with ALL the universities? Or are my expectations too high?

U of A and ASU

Is that basically the only colleges I can get into…? I don’t want to go there due to their big party scene.

Coming from friends at both of those, it’s very easy to avoid the parties.

If you do really well this last semester, you would be eligible for admittance to a UC, but it still won’t be all that likely.

Buggie111, Even though I can avoid it I would rather attend a university where it’s actually respected for their education not the parties if ya know what I mean? My dream schools are either OSU, Syracuse, UCONN, or FSU but I’m just wondering if these are too much of a reach?

I’d say that they are. You’re barely on the bubble for FSU and OSU, and can rule out Syracuse (although UCONN could be an option). If all else fails, try an upper level (sophomore year) transfer into either ASU or UoA’s honors college, which are very highly regarded.

I’ll just try to rely on being lucky with my teacher rec’s and essay I guess :/

There’s always the option of doing community college for a couple years to get your GPA up and then transferring…
