Chance me 2

Can you guys chance me?

US citizen, Texas residency, living in Morocco right now without my parents (American HS), first-gen college student

School doesn't do GPA, but I'm getting a 6 average of all classes on the 1-7 IB scale, equivalent to about 3.8 unweighted, above 4 weighted. No class rank either, but my college counselor said she'll mention in her recommendation that I'm among the top.

My SATs are a bit on the low side, 2110 superscored:
Jan: 640 CR, 760 M, 690 W (76 MC, 6 E)
May: 630 CR, 780 M, 680 W (71 MC, 8 E)
I'm doing Math Level 2, Chem, and Physics SAT II

For my classes, I did:
9th: Eng, Geo, Int. Sci, Hist., Computers, French, Arabic, Music, Gym
10th: Eng, Alg2, Chem, Physics, Hist., Computers, French, Business
11th: English SL, French Ab Initio, Econ HL, Chem HL, Math HL, Physics HL

Taking ab initio french I guess is gonna hurt a bit, though we have a reason (I was almost ignored first year since my level wasn't congruent with that of the class). I guess 4 HLs helps my case.

Recommendations should help a good deal, especially if I can get my Chem teacher to do one.

ECs are the bad part. There are a bunch things that I did informally (tech advisor to some teachers), so I'm not sure if I can put those down. I'll list them all here:
9th: Informal tech advisor to some teachers
10th: People to People, informal tech advisor to some teachers
11th: Debate Team cofounder/copres, Amis Des Ecoles, PTA event helper, Chess club, still informal tech advisor
12th: Gonna continue with debate, amis des ecoles, and I'm gonna start doing IB Computer Science independent of the school with a teacher, I am pretty sure I got the RPI Medal
(For Amis Des Ecoles and PTA events, the groups are small and I'm very involved, so maybe I can put down the fact that I was dedicated to them)

I want to continue in business/econ and/or physical science while in college.

Potential List is (gonna be narrowed down as time goes on):
Reach: UPenn ED, MIT, Berkeley, Rice
High Match: UMichigan, Emory
Match: Chapel Hill, Tulane, UVA, RPI
Safety: UT Austin, Northeastern (since my principal is friends with someone in admissions and he can put a good word)

College counsellor agrees with this list, so what do you guys think? Any other suggestions?

I don’t think UMich would be high match for you. Without superscoring, your SAT is 2090 which is near the low end of mid 50. Your GPA of 3.8 is below admission average. Considering oos and current admission rate of 32%, UMich LSA would be a low reach and Ross would be a reach.

I would not count on Northeastern being a safety, no matter who you know. There are many stories of people who are friends with admin council, or even friends with the university president that do not get in. Don’t ride on that. I would put Northeastern under Match, or if you’re really playing it safe, High Match.

chapel hill is probably not a match. It is pretty hard to get in.

OK, so it looks like I overestimated myself. You guys have any other ideas for safeties? Preferably ones that have good STEM and business programs.

I just got my subject tests back. 730 Math IIC, 800 Physics, 760 Chemistry. Does that hurt my chances?

chance me first and I will chance you back in the same amount of detail.

I do admit that a lot of your ECs aren’t exactly official or able to be proven, but your SAT score is actually not as low as many of your competitors (although also not as nearly as high as others). It may or may not help that you’re a first generation college student, but I think that it will. With the stats you mentioned, I would say that MIT and UPenn are definitely out of the picture while Rice and Berkeley is a reach.
I don’t think you will have any trouble getting into Chapel Hill, Tulane, UVA and RPI, while you’re definitely in for UT Austin and Northeastern.
As for UMichigan and Emory, you’ll have to write a kickass essay and get good recommendation letters.
Hope that helped!

There is one thing I forgot to mention about UPenn. The reason I’m pushing for it early decision is that a representative (who is in admissions) from there came to our school, along with some others, and presented UPenn to us. There was a Q&A session afterward, and through the course of events we were walking out together, and talking. According to my principal, I stood out to her, and she thought I was interesting, so he hooked us up and said that if I push for ED, I have a slim shot. Could that work?
