Along with Georgia Tech I am considering:
Texas A&M
Virginia Tech
Purdue
Penn State
Cincinnati (safety)

Thanks for all of your input. I am still hoping to improve my chances with my work this year.

@ ilyssa: I listed above only my honors and AP’s that I am taking. I am currently taking calculus and will be working with the AP teacher to help me prepare to take the exam in May. I opted not to take the class itself because the teacher is very difficult and I really need to sure up my GPA for senior year.

@ itsme123: I took the SAT this saturday and I really feel like I at least got a 2000, but I am expected something closer to 2100. Hopefully that will help.

@mathfan123: That range makes me feel slightly better because if my SAT score can get to the higher of that 50% I will be able to at least make up some of the difference in my GPA.

I am also attempting to explain why my GPA isn’t as high as I am capable of. However I am trying very hard to make sure I don’t seem like its just an excuse and I’m working with my teacher to make it seem as genuine as a I am.

Also doesn’t GTech recalculate the GPA giving 0.5 GPA for AP/Honors? That certainly should help my GPA because my school doesn’t have such a scale.

And because I figure to be a borderline canididate should I still go ahead and apply by the Nov. 1st deadline? I heard that I will recieve the decision by mid december and if I infact do not get in, it will make the rest of my applications much easier.

The 0.5 is for AP only. That will raise your 3.2 to a 3.35 or so. That’s still extremely low - bottom 5-10% of admitted students. If you want to get in with that GPA, you need an extremely high SAT score (2250+), great EC’s, and references.

you should email someone in admissions at georgia tech to say you are self-studying calculus. Honestly, it would look better to get a B in AP calc, then to not have it at all.

I live in Georgia and I know one of my friends was waitlisted with a 2000+ SAT score (I don’t really know his GPA though), so I wouldn’t say you have the greatest chance. Maybe try the Oxford/Georgia Tech program if you really want to go?

You could probably write about it in the “special circumstances” portion of the application.

“If you have experienced any special circumstances that may have affected your academic progress or opportunities to engage or excel in activities, please provide details to enable appropriate consideration.”

It’s Emory that has the Oxford program, not Tech. Tech has GT Savannah, which you can’t apply to (you apply to GT and are offered GT Savannah as one potential option if rejected from GT).
