IM,
I’ve moved this to the Chances forum as that is what it mainly concerns. If you want input on what else to work on, please revise your post, give it an appropriate title and then post on the Admissions forum.

I’m applying for a prep school so things may be different but how does EVERYONE and their grocer’s cousin know how their Rec was??? Is it not supposed to be confidential, I’ve browsed through common app and on a lot of app you sign a waiver stating you waive your right to view it… Oh well idk.

I myself am Indian and from what my parents have told me (which they got from adcoms of Harvard and Yale, went to school there) being an Indian neither helps not does it hurt as much as Koreans. As Indians we are definitely ORMs and admissions are a lot more competitive. I love the tabla and if the adcoms are anything like me they will be fishing for you… JK… but it is unusual and they will like that.

I really cannot tell you SATs because I took them when I was 12 and I got around a 1300 (cr + math) and a 27 act… I can tell you that getting a 2300+ will help your chances tremendously at competitive schools.

Colleges will look at school profile and that usually shows matriculation data. You say your class is competitive, which it very well may be, but they will have second thoughts if they see NO top schools. They know that few people go there but they at least like to see some, otherwise it sounds like either everyone likes going to state (if a school is super competitive it will NOT send people to state, even the best states) or rejection across the board.

You seem to have great chances, but who am I to say. Wait till April 2010 and I wish you luck.

UPDATE more info: Other than english, I am fluent in two lang: Hindi and Gujarati. I was born in India, and then i moved here. (does that make any diff.?). I am also taking Spanish III pre-ap in school.

I would say you can’t be rejected at all of them, but which ones you’re in at is really just a guessing game. It seems you’ve done all you could.

UPDATE: i got 2nd today at the Rotary Club speech contest that i mentioned in my original post…Only 1st moves on to area, then district, etc. tear…

From what I can tell, a lot of schools are looking for people who aren’t only academically superior (you are), but also who are interesting as people. The fact that you are from India and can speak two languages in addition to English is an interesting quality. But I’m just some high school kid anyways, so don’t take my opinion too seriously. Good luck and thanks for chancing me earlier!

Your SAT is obviously very solid, although if you’re going to apply to schools like MIT, Rice, CMU, CTech, etc. an 800 would be nice. Maybe take the SATII in Math if necessary. Otherwise, I probably would not retake. Your scores will get you in pretty much everywhere. That won’t be much of an issue (though of course 2300+ looks even better).

Keep your grades up and take the hardest classes possible. Bring up your rank. Seems like you are doing everything possible in that regard.

Stay involved and keep getting those awards, ha.

Your essays and recs will really determine acceptance to HYPS type schools. Northwestern, University of Chicago, and Duke are all in range. Keep it up. Sorry if this is all just common sense, but I think you know what you’re doing anyhow, ha. You just want assurance :D. GL!

well Torcher, I felt me being only a couple hours away from Rice i would most likely get in. My counselor told me same. but yah, it is definitely a very good school. but i felt i had an in-state advantage, but idk thats just my opinion.

UPDATE: On the Academic Team i mentioned up there, this year i placed in number sense in our district(but not high enough for state), but im going to STATE in Ready Writing and Social Studies this year!!! yay!! lol

All right, Rice is not a saftey school. It is a private school, so it doesn’t matter if you are in-state or not. Also realize that if you are instate the harder it is, because Rice wants more geographic diversity, they want to take more kids from out-of-state. Another thing, I have around the same sat scores as you, and I also live a couple of hours away from rice, I did early decision to Rice and was rejected.

Is your counselor ■■■■■■■■, where did she go to school(Is she even qualified enough to be a counselor?, did she tell you that if you are instate its easier to get in)? Rice is not a saftey school for you. You may get in or you may not, its 50/50.

I can’t believe you thought you had an advantage because you are instate, the closer you live to Rice, the harder it is to get in. I live in Dallas and was rejected early decision with a 2200/2400 and 1500/1600 (reading and math).

well, lets just say the counselor isnt THE BEST. i dont think he ever used the word “safety” but he said that i could get in, and i shouldnt be too worried about it. but yeah i understand its a hard/great school to get into and i didnt mean to undermine it at all. but i dont think i even want to really go there, lol
